The trade was a fail and should have gotten Lynch fired especially when you compound the wasted picks on S.Thomas and J.Kinlaw.

Are the 9ers still paying for Trey Lance years after him not being the starter?
Why would you grade a trade at the time? Even so how was guaranteeing 230 million to a guy with major character concerns a good idea then? Was a tremendous risk.

I know you're not asking me, IMO, missing on the draft is a lot more important than free agency. Cap space can be manipulated and washed. Missing on the draft can hurt your teams future. IMO

You are correct!
Hitting in the draft has propelled the Chiefs and Eagles to multiple Super Bowl trophies.
Those 5 first round picks may have hurt us in regards to Lombardi trophies over Super Bowl appearances.

You can't manipulate 230 mil guaranteed. It's guaranteed.

Again they both were coming off pro bowl years Wilson a HOFer and Watson was 25 with 4 straight pro bowls. In hindsight absolutely but at the time using 3 1st round picks + When we didn't even know who would even be there is top 3 right next to the Herschel Walker and Ricky Williams trades of how outlandish it was.
Both Walker/Ricky were MEGA prospects, some of the greatest college football players ever till this day that played at the highest level of competition. Not only did we not know who would be there but Trey only played 1 year at North Dakota 💀.

Ive said it before the biggest mistake this regime made was trading for Jimmy instead of signing Cousins. Non of this would have happened and we probably at least have 1 Super Bowl
The biggest mistake they made was picking Solomon Thomas instead of Mahomes
And their horrible first round draft picks in general

The 49ers have had the worst first round drafting I've ever seen or heard of. It's amazing that they have been as good as the have been in spite of their horrible drafts.
Luckily their late round picks have been great. Their excellent late round picks are a testament to good scouting. And their horrible early round picks are a testament to poor selections by Lynch and Shanahan.
Fortunately, over the last two drafts they have drafted better, and so it seems that they are now letting the scouts make the picks

Not at the time, in hindsight sure that's easy to point out after the fact with the results. At that time we all knew the plan was to sign Cousins. Instead Lynch overrode it and traded for Jimmy

Using multiple first round picks on a guy who gets special massages and then guaranteeing him 230 mil on top of that was asinine at the time and is even worse now. We moved off of Trey with no financial hamstrings. Browns will still have a 50 mil cap hit from Watson in 27.
Was also asinine for Denver to make that trade then give Russ the extension before he ever played for them.
If given choice Id rather take a shot on a rook then pay some guy a huge deal and the picks unless you are absolutely sure what you are getting. If Bryce Young tanks this year Carolina is still in a better position than Cleveland going forward financially.
In the end I was the one arguing with Command years ago that you don't trade multiple firsts for Khalil Mack. Never a fan of trading 2 1sts let alone 3. I get why they did it at time but I didn't like it on principle.

Absolutely sure what you're getting? Watson turned the Texans around and had 4 straight pro bowls. What if he kept his momentum and was bringing the Browns to the AFC Championship? Its easy to say its worse after the results.
You can say its worse with the media damage / reputation, but ultimately Watson had a proven track record of being a superstar.
You know who else had allegations? Peyton Manning, Charles Haley,, Antonio Brown,, Ben Roethlisberger, Kobe Bryant, and so on.

If the allegations didn't have legs the Texans wouldn't trade him. There was clearly an issue there. Then to give that guy 230 mil guaranteed. Ridiculously stupid.
For 230 mil I sure as hell better be getting an elite superstar.

Maybe the T. Lance trade helped us? Saved us from ourselves?
