Jokes aside, the consequences of the Lance trade were evident last season and will ripple for the next few seasons.

Keeping losing hope alive like always

On August 26, 2023, Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth-round pick (Malik Mustapha).

Original trade:

49ers get:
  • 2021 first-round pick (No. 3 overall)
Dolphins get:
  • 2021 first-round pick (No. 12 overall)
  • 2022 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)
  • 2022 third-round pick (No. 101 overall)
  • 2023 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)

What we lost out on:

Micah Parsons, edge rusher
  • Pick: 2021 first-round pick (No. 12 overall)
  • Team: Cowboys

Cole Strange, guard
  • Pick: 2022 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)
  • Team: Patriots
Channing Tindall, linebacker
  • Pick: 2022 third-round pick (No. 101 overall)
  • Team: Dolphins

Bryan Bresee, defensive tackle
  • Pick: 2023 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)
  • Team: Saints

What an epic failure. This trade would have got most GM's fired.

Imagine having Parsons who has 52.5 sacks in 63 games and Bresee who has 12 sacks in 2 years (7.5 sacks last year) on this DLine?

This has to be arguably one of the worst trades in NFL history.

Putting aside the fact that I personally believe Micah Parsons to be among the most overrated players in football, he might not have been Micah Parsons if he got drafted to us. People forget that he was playing linebacker for the Cowboys early on and looked completely lost. I remember seeing a tweet from some reporter with Parsons highlights and the caption said "Parsons looks like he has never played football before." Then both Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory got injured and Parsons was forced to play defensive end out of necessity and he took off.

We never know what would have been if he was on our team. Now obviously, he would have been preferred to no pick at all. But its easy to use hindsight and claim we missed out on this current version of Parsons.
^Not to mention that linebacker and/or edge rusher were NOT two positions of need in 2021. So done talking about Micah Parsons being someone we missed on because of the trade.
Don't forget that now we got Mac Jones for a bag of chips
Trey Lance trade revisited. We did the right thing by trading him after first doing the wrong thing by drafting him.

this is dumber than a bag of rocks. because changing history would also mean Purdy likely isn't picked when and where by the Niners. they would've ended up drafting a different QB.

If Purdy wasn't picked we would have brought him in as an UDFA.
That trade wasn't what bothered me. Us not going after Brady when he was available was a big miss.
Micah Parsons sucks.
Terrible trade. Trading the two future 1's was horrible. I get trading one but two is a price too much when you are only moving up to the 3rd pick. Taking the 3rd best QB wasn't worth it at the time.

One might say it's easy to say that in retrospect, but honestly it's probably worse than the Ricky Williams / Herschel Walker trades. Both were super mega stars, some of the best ever at the college level. Might be the most bone headed trade in nfl history. I'd like to hear of any other trade worse than that not from hindsight but at the time it happened

Yah the Trey Lance trade was horrible, I can't think of a worse trade. Just think where this franchise would be had they drafted Ja'Marr Chase, Micah Parsons or even Jaylen Waddle. Who knows they still might have drafted Brock Purdy. I think the only difference would be Brock Purdy getting drafted a little higher.

We still would have Brock, wish I saved the clip I saw. Apparently the war room was split on who to take with the last pick and Jed asked "Who is the best player?" and Kyle answered Brock Purdy

Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson were clearly worse trades because of the financials. Cleveland will have to pay Watson 80 mil next year and 50 mil in 27 to not play for them in all likelihood.
We shoulda just pulled a Draft Day movie move and taken Sewell lol

Not even close they were both proven franchise QBs at the time of the trade. In hindsight yes at the time way more logical than the trade for #3 when we had no idea who would be there
