The only plausible explanation I can think of is that theyre expecting to draft a DT high (Graham ?) and sign another DT and he might not be a starter...and he wants to start. And they get to save a few million on the cap. The 5m dead cap hit is peanuts.
He was decent as a pass rusher but absolutely horrible vs the run. One the the leagues worst.
Saleh will be making us a top 5 D vs the run his priority

Wonder why we releasing him? I thought he was one of our better DTs last year annnnnnd as I typed that; yeah keyword "our" lol. Just weird to me for us to take so many damn dead cap hits and for this, a position we're thin

His pass rush win rate is #7 in the NFL, so it wasn't just us being bad that made him look good. He's bad in the run game though.

There's no cap hit. He was in the last year of his deal. We will be saving money on the cap

I still wonder if it was a cut in hopes to resign at a cheaper rate.
Thoughts?

We have bad DT's. But he was among our best ones. So now we are worse. The extreme need for DT now increases even more. Making it an even more desperate position.

And outside of Bosa who was an absolute given. Their track record of drafting DL is straight garbage.

Yeah, I hope this is a move to make financial room for Jonathan Allen.
