Almost appeared to look like a direct, deliberate hit to the knee!
Yeah
Really? I don't think player deliberately try and injure other players. They all know that it can happen to them if they get that reputation. Players often dive in to make a tackle and the target is moving. They can't precisely aim their tackle. It's one reason I hate the personal foul with targeting. Even the late hit on the QB. Sliding late makes it hard for a defender to avoid contact when he's already committed himself. These guys are all over 200 lbs and moving fast. It's not that easy to avoid some of that contact.
The rule was introduced to try and cut down on the brutal hits. Hits where the crown of the helmet is intentionally used as a weapon. The problem is they don't allow for incidental contact. Any contact is treated the same. One of the late hits on Fields yesterday actually had little if any contact. I slowed it down and the defender reached over the top of Fields as he was lying on the ground and threw his body off to the side. He barely touched him.The defender should know better and not give the official a chance to throw a flag but when there is at least an attempt to avoid the contact and there is no hard hit there shouldn't be a flag. Same goes with an incidental contact with a face mask or the helmet of the QB.
I've heard many older QBs say that the rules have gone too far. QBs are football players too. Drilling a defenseless player is one thing. Barely touching him while trying to make a tackle is another.
