Yeah I think he's going with 9. Dogs name is 9er and that number is special for them because his Dad and brother wore it.

Why would he change his number from 5 if it's available? Out of respect for Jeff Garcia?

I'm pretty sure an upper classman had 9 when he joined NDSU. I'm with you... my $$ is on #9.

3 years of an aging veteran versus 15 years of a top prospect? Tough choice - I'd have to say no.

What if I told you that Lance would be a bust and a backup in the NFL by the end of his first contract? Do you make the trade for Rodgers then? How about if I told you that'd he just be an average passer?

Because honestly nobody knows for certain how he will turn out. We all hope he becomes a great QB but NFL Draft history is littered with great prospects that failed to perform as hoped. Rodgers on the other hand is a future HOFer coming off an MVP season. We know definitively who he is in the NFL.

Lance might become a great, top of the NFL QB, be slightly above average, average or a bust. The opportunity cost is taking the chance that he'll be the first one instead of the others.

Agreed.

3 Years of Aaron Rodgers = We are likely the odds-on favorite to win the Super Bowl those three years.
15 years of a Top Prospect = There's a chance he's here for 15 years and is our franchise QB, but there's also a chance he flames out.

Since Alex Smith retired, let's look at him and the #1 OVR QB's that came before him:
Peyton Manning, 1998 --- The dream scenario. 14 seasons with the Colts. A Super Bowl win and a HoF career.
Tim Couch, 1999 --- 5 years with the Browns. Bust.
Chad Pennington, 2000 --- 7 years with the Jets. Had a pretty above-average tenure.
Michael Vick, 2001 --- 6 years with the Falcons. Didn't develop as a passer until he went to Philadelphia.
David Carr, 2002 --- 5 years with the Texans. Bust.
Carson Palmer, 2003 --- 7 years with the Bengals. Probably would've been the next great QB, had he not had that major injury.
Eli Manning, 2004 --- 16 seasons with the Giants. Not the regular season savant that Peyton was, but he got 2 SB rings and will go to the HoF.
Alex Smith, 2005 --- 8 seasons with the 49ers. Ruined by inept coaching staffs until Harbaugh came.

These #1 overall picks are seen as surefire things, and yet only Peyton and Eli Manning enjoyed decade-long stints. There were some QB's that potentially could've lasted longer, if things went the right way organizationally---Pennington, Palmer, Smith... But it really is a crapshoot.

Trey Lance is coming to a very ideal situation, but he also needs a lot of time to develop. Incredible potential. But he's far from being a surefire player.

I dont care what number he wears as long as he's tossing and running for TD's.
I didn't know Lance played all 3 sports, baseball, basketball and football growing up. Man his basketball footage is impressive too. Explains why he's such a twitched up athlete combining all those different skill sets from the three. It's likely why the big schools wanted him to play linebacker and safety cause how good his feet were for someone his size

Lance is my guy, the QB I wanted for weeks now. I was super pumped when we got him. Having said that I spent the last few weeks being very critical of Kyles QB evaluations, and he also likes my guy.......

There's definitely an awkward internal debate some are now having.

"KYLES QB EVALUATIONS ARE TRASH!"

"Hey he picked the guy I really wanted!"

Yeah, gotta have faith.

I really think Beathard was taking care of an old school NFL family with an outside shot it might work. That move was about CJ's future in the NFL. I think it was a he might work as a back up, but more likely he is a coach someday.

What Shanny did with Mullens was straight up sorcery.

I think Lance is risky as hell, but it's Shanny so I'll roll with it.

You can't ask for better physical traits, let's just give shanny time to coach him up. I pray fans have patience with Trey. Dude can be amazing just let him learn (and let's hope build up the oline) before they throw him in

Watching his highlights he looks like a 1 read, then run type of QB. Most of the highlights on youtube are just run plays, sprinkled in with a wide open bomb.
........patience would have served the team better.

They took the patient approach in 2017. This time they got who they think can be Mahomes.

I hope he is the next Mahomes, or better!

Time will tell

who wouldn't... but do you see Mahomes being this good with every coaches in the NFL right now?

Thats what I love right now though. Is there any other team in the NFL that is more ready for a Mahomes like player right now? We even have our own Alex Smith to hold the fort down for a year.
and we don't have to worry about this guy driving into a tree while hammered, or hitting his girlfriend

Nice still and explanation. I know it's becoming taboo to comp Lance with Kap, but look at the difference when it comes to the release point. That over the head release that Lance has allows for more arc on the trajectory when needed. Lance simply has a smoother, more natural looking release and throwing motion.

I also feel like Derek Carr having decent NFL success points to the Texans ruining David behind a bad offensive line. I mean can they really be that different as prospects? Physically I feel like they're quite similar.

Because honestly nobody knows for certain what he will do. We all hope he becomes another Tom Brady but the NFL is littered with great QBs who one day fall off a cliff and turn into 2015 Peyton Manning.

Rodgers might work out... He might not. Its Super Bowl or bust for a 37 year old QB making 30 million next year who hasn't been to a Super bowl in 10 years.

I'm sure you thought in your head this seemed clever but really it's just ridiculous.

BRB..acting like a perennial NFL Pro Bwler, league MVP and future HOFer constitutes as much of a risk as a guy who hasn't taken a single NFL snap yet.

One of the most truly absurd takes I've seen since I've been on this forum.

yeah no way. I don't believe it.

I think Atlanta and Denver were in play.
