I'm not saying he would have been great but he never really got a fair shot. He didn't have the college background that Purdy did so he wasn't close to being ready to start in the NFL.

huh ???
he did get a year as a backup, Jimmy started all of 2021 minus two games

Yeah i don't agree with that poster either. i think he got a fair shot and the year he got injured when he was the clear starter it was obvious it was going to be a long year full of growing pains.

It's quite obvious now, 1 year of college ball just isn't enough. Lesson learned.

My point is 4 starts is hardly a good test for a QB that had so little experience. One year in college with a Div 1AA team isn't the sam as one year with an SEC or Big 10 team. On top of that it was the Covid season where teams were watered down because of players opting out. It was a risk taking nearly any QB that year as we saw by all the busts.

I think everyone would agree he needed playing time. Ultimately he was given the starting job in his second season without a competition… which he would have assuredly lost to the other QBs on the roster. That was unfair to the team, especially given they were primed to compete for a SB.

We'll never know if they would have stuck with Trey as the starter through '22 had he not been injured. I don't think so personally. Either way, it would have been insane to give him '23 unearned as well.

Those same media zombie fans overexaggerate their criticisms of Justin Herbert. He is an amazing QB. Has a good chance to once again play as a top 5 QB. Still has all his amazing physical skills.

I think your theory about 'media zombie fans' being overly critical about Trey Lance is pretty backward. The media has been generally friendly, and still is in large part, to Lance as a prospect. People who watch film and understand the position are critical of Lance, because it's a mess.

Same thing in a different way with Herbert. I agree 'media zombie fans' are overly critical of Herbert, primarily based on a lack of team success. People who watch film and understand the position know he's a top tier QB.

There's a common thread here.

Here is a google search of "Trey Lance Bust"... and heck I didn't even filter it to start before last night's game.

https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-opera-mobile&sca_esv=4c66011f2d283160&channel=new&espv=1&q=trey+lance+bust&tbm=nws&source=lnms&fbs=AIIjpHyYzEGkr-KkdhTNDsbGd11PfMCIS5BCXbaQBnEVIDmSUUR_5l-cKwVKv3IRYG99a5pJRZx9QObcKc75S3tz9Xk2n4dUT4BzWcbgjl10TlaVixGbsSUpVv3wHM8ddHMy8TyO02n4QlVY0bPgzoGFAd0mjsUIXjuHe1Aq-vsL8rtSdVZ93TQAZbgfY8pDBUb_-t_SA83kxrvTqW1IaRCs9dVlZW-y6zZ_WY6SJbDTgp_HzdBM0BA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiu07yyw-qOAxX4FTQIHQhnKEcQ0pQJegQIERAB&biw=411&bih=696&dpr=2.63

Keep going through the next pages, if you have the balls.
He's a good kid by all accounts, and the chances he keeps getting at least as backup mean that there is some talent there. Other big time first round busts were already out of the league by this stage after they were drafted. I only wish him well. It helps that he's in the AFC now :)

My man… he's a #3 overall pick who has been in the league for 4 full seasons and has been unable to earn a 2nd string QB position. He is the epitome of a bust at this point.

Even those headlines aren't framing it as negatively as you want to suggest. Mostly describing him as a bust with his first two teams, which again is 100 percent accurate. Beyond that I took your media comments to relate more to tv shows, social media, and sports radio… not articles like this.

I want to add to my last post that it's pretty disingenous to search 'Trey Lance Bust' to look for an accurate assessment of media coverage.

Next time just search 'Trey Lance'. Look at the difference in headlines when you don't introduce bias from the jump. Here's some examples:

'Chargers, Trey Lance dominate Hall of Fame Game; NFL debuts virtual measurement system'

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6529462/2025/07/31/hall-of-fame-game-chargers-lions/

'Trey Lance has 'big night' in Chargers' Hall of Fame Game win over Lions'

https://www.nfl.com/news/trey-lance-has-big-night-in-chargers-hall-of-fame-game-win-over-lions

'Trey Lance just proved exactly what the Cowboys could never offer him'

As of now he is a bust. Idk how that can be argued. Things can change, but he was a bust for us.
Maholmes, Purdy, Goff, Hurts, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Lebron.... total combined touchdowns this season - 0.

Trey Lance - 2 tds...

I've seen enough, get him his HOF jacket.

How old are you? 10?

You would like it if he was 10

Also, Steve was 30-31 when he had his breakout season.

Your focus on ten year olds is rather disturbing. Please seek help. Allow the adults to hold a conversation.

I suppose when Young was busy winning the Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien awards as the top college QB in the nation, that was? What? Some kind of fluke? Not excelling? He was the top QB coming out of college. Tell me how this is not excelling?

Disingenuous? From a guy who uses results from after that game? We are talking about all offseason leading into the game..

Then got the nerve to talk about bias?

Look you've been, I hate using this word... but gaslighting for a while now.

You've been here since 2012... has your name been SmokeyJoe this whole time? Or have you changed it? Did you have a different account before 2012?

You clearly don't know what gaslighting means. What you did was a textbook example of bias.

I've never had a different handle here. My account was made in 2012, but I mostly lurked until ~2021 or so.

He would have gotten more playing time if purdy wasn't drastically better immediately. That's how it goes in sports sometimes (fair or not)

This is what you wrote

"I think your theory about 'media zombie fans' being overly critical about Trey Lance is pretty backward. The media has been generally friendly, and still is in large part, to Lance as a prospect"

The media stating a young QB is a bust after just 3.5 games... two games which he, as a young rookie, played well in (ended that rookie season with 5TDs and 2INTs..1rushing TD). Ended his career with us with 5TDs and 3INTS. He couldn't beat out 2 eventual starters in the league, Brock Purdy & Sam Darnold. And an established trusted Vet (Cooper Rush) on a team he was traded to.

He's a Bust because of that.. riiiiiiiiiight.

And also keep with the gaslighting.... I don't f**k around with this forum anymore. For too long this place has let members b******t their way around the rules... let these disingenuous losers change their usernames, with no indication of who they were previously on their profiles. You could be going back and forth with the same person, who's arguing in bad faith, for years without knowing it.
