About his play tonight.. I think he did well. Even though it's preseason, there was still lots of pressure for him to perform. I still feel he's being indecisive on some 3rd and 5s.... I feel if his first read is not there.. then nothing wrong with committing to run the ball forward to get a new set of downs. Hopefully Harbs and Roman tell him that during the week. I understand this is preseason, and this is the time where you try to develop and take chances. But I feel being set on instincts is more important. I feel that can also open up the middle of the field on thos 3rd and 5s, if the defenders start getting worried about you running up.
As far as the fumbled snap that someone mentioned... they had their guard playing center this game. There was a few issues with the snap or ball location on shotgun.

Oh man I knew this thread would be buzzing...
It's PRESEASON. And it just happens to be the least important preseason game of them all.
I've always been a Lance fan and figured it's a matter of time for him as long as he gets an opportunity but Lance has been in the league for 4 seasons now. I'm glad he's looking much better out there and looks to be throwing with touch now. He was in control last night and making good decisions. Excellent stuff.
But once again...it's preseason. Detroit wasn't giving him anything crazy to worry about. Harbaugh may have an advantage in terms of playing the position but he can't play the position for his QBs. There is no buying into anything. He's a coach just like Shanahan. Roman's system has always been one good for QBs early on, then it falls off because teams adjust to it.
We'll see how Trey looks in the regular season if he ever gets the opportunity. He finally gone one last year with the Cowboys in a game Washington didn't care about. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't anything to get excited about. We all saw Kenny Pickett have an unbelievable preseason in 2023. How did he do that season?

They have Herbert, So he is never going to play unless Herbert gets hurt. So really all Harbaugh is doing is developing him for the next team to reap the benefits. Hey atleast we gave Mac Jones a 2 year contract :) That way if he develops nicely here we can trade him the next offseason.
Yes sort of like the Alex Smith situation.

The 49ers didn't draft Lance to be the starter right away. They knew he was a project but unfortunately he got thrown into the starting roll when JG got hurt again. Things might have gone different for him if he had gotten a year or 2 as a backup and been able to learn the system and position. I'm not saying he would have been great but he never really got a fair shot. He didn't have the college background that Purdy did so he wasn't close to being ready to start in the NFL.

How old are you? 10?
Can you point to me what age Steve Young started thriving in the NFL?

Steve was considered a lot less of a project. He did start in Tampa for a season and a half.
Trey has like five starts in the league and its tough for him to even be a 2nd stringer now, let alone start. He now not only has to prove he's better than other veteran backups, while being a baby rookie in terms of live NFL games, but also needs a perfect storm of injuries to even get on the field.
It's much more of an uphill battle for Trey than it was ever for Young, in my opinion
I agree with this, I'm pointing out the time frame. Young actually talks about it a lot. Development, he had the advantage of someone wanting to develop him. Trey does not. The NFL doesn't work that way anymore.

Just like media zombie fans overexaggerate their criticisms of Trey (he has only played in like 3.5 regular season games). As if his career is almost over, when the likes of Alex Smith sucked for so much longer and was given so much time to get it together.
Those same media zombie fans overexaggerate their criticisms of Justin Herbert. He is an amazing QB. Has a good chance to once again play as a top 5 QB. Still has all his amazing physical skills.

I think your theory about 'media zombie fans' being overly critical about Trey Lance is pretty backward. The media has been generally friendly, and still is in large part, to Lance as a prospect. People who watch film and understand the position are critical of Lance, because it's a mess.
Same thing in a different way with Herbert. I agree 'media zombie fans' are overly critical of Herbert, primarily based on a lack of team success. People who watch film and understand the position know he's a top tier QB.
There's a common thread here.

Good luck to him. He's a great kid with a fantastic work ethic. Still, he wasn't good enough on the 49ers and that's undeniable. Maybe he is better now. Either way, I am happy with Purdy as QB1.
I hope he gets a shot to compete for a starting job if he shows improvement this year.
