Like HOW did we mess that one up so bad? What did we see in him that gave us the greenlight to make that trade but how was our evaluation so far off that Kyle was having reservations in year 2 of training camp?

It was an abject failure in terms of planning and risk assessment. This is the kind of thing that can happen when you don't have a legitimate GM, IMO.
it was a gamble, Zach Wilson was the true target

and i have a feeling we might add him this year as a back up

You are undervaluing the impact had on QBs due to COVID that year. Trever has been OK but hasn't been a transformational QB in JAX.

The rest of the first rounders are on either team 2 and/or soon to be team 3.
not sure how i'm undervalued anything in this. Just putting the dots together

49ers had scouts in person at ZW's games.
shannalynch both were in attendance at ZWs pro day and didn't attend Lance's or Jones's first pro day
shannalynch were both impressed at ZW pro day that they traded up hours after
The only thing they didn't count on is Saleh drafting their crush
So they gave up all that capital to move up in the draft and still didn't guarantee themselves their guy?

That seems pretty idiotic to me.
if my connection is true.. it's only idiotic when it doesn't work.. in the end, all QBs sucked

No. It was bad, no doubt. But I think the Deshawn Watson trade has the #1 spot, finally sending the Hershel Walker trade to #2.

Ya, that was a lot money and cap room invested. You can overcome draft picks these days, since they are at least cheap. But if you give a player a long term deal with a big guarantee, that hurts even more.
Will be interesting to see where Lance ends up in free agency. I think there is a good chance he lands on the practice squad somewhere after camp but idk if he's good enough to crack a roster. Such a wild career. At least he made good money but odds are his career is going to be stuck where it is. Maybe he can pull a resurgence in a few years.

Yeah everything about the move in hindsight stinks. You don't trade up to 3 if you're doing it for QB2 and the teams picking ahead of you have clear QB needs.

I do think they fell in love with Trey the person, saw the tools many here love and the lack of competition didn't give them a chance to evaluate him properly.

I do wonder what would've happened had Trey not gotten hurt week 2 but hard to imagine him leading this team better than what Brock did in 2023, hell even late in 2022.

Especially since Trey still hasn't been able to show much to warrant that selection.

Another reason I want Brock here long term. I just don't trust Kyle in another early QB draft move after we missed Trey's evaluation so bad.

Honestly the smart thing for Trey may be playing in one of the other leagues to get game reps unless he can find a team with a weak starter to bring him in as QB2.

Him being QB3 anywhere doesn't get him anywhere closer to where he wants to be. He needs to play. It's his only chance to revive his career.

Ricky Williams trade says hi.

Denver trading for Russ and killing their cap in the process was also worse.

The death knell for Lance was that Raiders preseason game the year he got traded. By that time, he'd been in the league for a bit and had been through some training camps, and multiple film room sessions. Yes, he had been hurt, but he had plenty of opportunity to improve the mental part of his game, and yes, I do understand there is a correlation between learning something in the classroom and then being able to apply it on the field. All that being said, he was simply awful in that game. He couldn't read the field at all and seemed to have no idea of what he was doing back there. He was also terrible in some of his Dallas preseason turns. Didn't he have like five picks in one of those games. If it hadn't been for my general irritation with all of the people in here who had been "insisting" how great he was going to be, from the moment he got drafted, and how much better he was than Jimmy, I might have felt sorry for him because he always seemed like a nice kid.

Strong candidate, for sure! Easily a top 10, maybe even a top 5. I just think that between the pics given up and the idiotic guaranteed contract, for a person of such questionable character - it was just such an epic disaster. The results were pure karma, and the Browns totally got what they deserved. I honestly thought I would never live to see someone making a worse trade than the Hershel Walker one though. Considering how many pics/players they gave up, WHO the Cowboys turned those pics into, and how little Walker ever did again.

I felt bad for him personally, and felt he was put in an untenable position which was the fault of our team.

That said, this is pro sports and he made 35 ish million he should have never had, lol.

TL was given a year to prepare, given every possible chance to play, Didn't have to earn his starting position in the friendliest QB system there is

What fault was it the 49ers?
