The deflected pass off the Raider defender for a TD was pure money.

Bill Walsh had a 1stt round bust early in his career with the 9ers like Shanny has had with TL… he picked RB Earl Cooper #1 in 1980 and he was going to be the franchise RB… dude sucked azz, did BW cut him and move on? No, he moved him to TE, salvaging his career and the draft pick, and he did pretty well… if Shanny decides to keep TL then he needs to reinvent this dude and salvage his career, I think TL would make a really good TE, he is a ginormous failure as a FQB.

He has value at QB. Worst case is he helps the defense prepare for mobile QBs.

Cross positions really don't fly these days.....but even Steve Young took snaps at WR to get him on the field. He was disgusted by it and clearly had bad body language, so it didn't last long....now that I think about....it might have only been one play....well at least that I saw. Point being though, maybe you gadget in Trey in games that the 49ers have a comfortable lead in.

You can't take last years version of Brock out of the game in the redzone, but if we don't get last years version of Brock this year, maybe they can get Trey some short yardage snaps to get some use out of him.

He's really not even mobile

We drafted him to elevate the team so that he can get away from pressure when the play breaks down.

Bad oline and people use it as an excuse for his poor performance. His indecisiveness and lack of mobility really is disappointing.

Bingo

Lol yup. Dropped INTs don't matter to some in here though

overall just slop fest for everyone. We're in trouble if anyone of the backup OL have to play. Poe and Zakelj were buttchecks. Moore stinks. Instead of drafting some solid depth in a good draft class, they took a TE with four feet and no hands and a kicker that can't make FGs.
Trey didn't look great in his first few attempts but the O line was so bad that he barely had time to set up before they were on him. I don't know if anyone was open that he could have thrown to but he had no time and no place to run. The team looked totally unprepared even for a pre season game. Did any of you actually expect the Raiders to have 3 sacks in the first 6 pass attempts?

What I don't understand is the reluctance t play the regulars for a couple of series. How good is any QB going to look when he's not getting protection and doesn't have any weapons. It's clear that Kyle views him as a backup at best or he wouldn't have him in that situation. The idea that the starters are too important to risk injury but it's okay for the backups is terrible. Eventually the starters have to play and they are just s likely to get hurt when they do as they are in a preseason game.

Worst pick in the draft by a mile. Who knows maybe they resign Gould? I think Moody will be OK, I think Latu gets cut.
I've been a proponent of Lance from the day we made the trade up from 12 to 3. And up until yesterday I was still sold on his long term viability as our QB. I have to admit that my confidence is waning now. It wasn't terrible. It also wasn't good. I didn't see much, if any improvement we were hearing about this offseason. And say what you will about Purdy, the offense scores more points, more TDs, with Purdy than any other QB.

What yesterday could have meant was the #2 spot was solidified and even that Lance was gunning for Purdy's spot. What yesterday did mean was that the #2 spot is absolutely in play for Darnold and Purdy is entrenched at #1.

Definitely a disappointing day. It's not a death knell, but it's not a good sign. He'll need to play substantially better in the next preseason game (which I assume he'll get less play than Darnold) in order to correct the narrative now.

This was the most rattled I think I've seen Lance play in a 49ers uniform. You could argue the Bears game but I thought he looked more confident in week 1.

No excuses for his performance, he needs to be better or he's never going to play, here or anywhere else.

Having said that, we don't have a backup offensive line. Zakel, Poe, Watson, Moore, and the veteran center we acquired that I can't think of the name... all terrible as well.

For the last 10 years or so, we usually see the OL have struggles early in the season, but none of those guys showed upside IMO.

I'm not going to panic after one preseason game, but I'm very concerned about our DL and OL depth. At least with the QB position we know Brock is the starter.

If Dan is saying that you can always go with the opposite.

Welp, I re-watched all the Trey Lance passes. First couple of series he was RUSty! Yuk. Yeah he didn't have the greatest OLine protection either. But the latter throws were pretty good. Clearly he needs more reps, but as QB2 he's not going to get starter reps that he needs to progress faster. His progress will be slow - but there has been progress that I can see. I think the latter half of the passes he threw were more of a realistic place where he is right now versus the first couple of passes. He did progress and settle down, after those first couple of sacks.

Criticisms - he's still taking too much time reading the defenses. That needs to improve. He doesn't have the short area burst that Brock has to get away from defenders. Those short passes are still getting away from him.

Positives - better mechanics, when he does see the window - great arm to get it there, and good placement and accuracy to get it there. He eventually threw some completed short passes and he definitely has better touch that his first year on those short throws. When he correctly recognizes the pocket is collapsing, he does have the mobility to move out and throw on the run.

I wouldn't put much stock in his first game performance after being injured, and he is still raw as heck for his career. He's only played 4+ games in his entire career in the NFL. If he stays healthy and continues to improve, like in the latter half of his throws - he'll be good. I'll want to see more improvement in his second game. I want him to start off strong in his second game next week. Hopefully I'll see less of the deer in the headlights stuff. If his mental side improves, we'll have a good QB. If not, obviously, he won't be here long.

I hate that I'm agreeing with you but here we are.

People ignored that NDSU used him as a fullback that could throw. He was fast for the FCS but he was never going to be a guy that continually breaks off long runs in the NFL.

His kind of mobility is the least useful because he's not agile to enable him to shake loose of defenders in the backfield. He's clunky moving laterally, if he gets into the open field he can pick up yards in a hurry due to his stride but I think having the quickness and Shake and Bake to dodge defenders in the backfield is a lot more valuable for a quarterback. Its disconcerting how many times we've seen this mobile QB get run down by DLs from behind.

Really they drafted a slower, less experienced Kaepernick. I saw more out of O'Connell as a passer yesterday then I've seen from Lance at anytime.

Yeah I didn't understand how a DT caught him from behind as he was trying to escape. He's totally got those heavy feet. Luckily we have Purdy

Agreed he looked rattled, can't just blame the OL even though they were horrible.

The OL depth is a real issue. Not drafting a single guy in a good draft, just seems on brand. Massively over drafting a TE in what was a good TE draft also seems on brand we will see a lot of football to be had

Just doesn't seem confident enough running ball. He wants to be a pass first guy but sometimes you got to just tuck the ball and go. At this point I'm not sure if he's ever gonna do that here.

Good points. He looked better as the game went on so that's a trend that continued, and a good sign for a young QB. Watching it live yesterday, I forgot that he isn't going to flip a switch and be accustomed to game speed, even if it was second string defense game speed. He needed to reacquaint himself to facing live bullets and although it took three drives, it did look better towards the end of the first half. He'll need to take baby steps.

The negative things to say about Lance points I think.
