All I know is last season at this time the Niners had a SB contender and they were entering the season with the plan to have Trey Lance be the one leading them and Brock Purdy as the backup. They had a season vet who had just taken them to the NFC Championship throwing on a side field waiting to be traded and they still planned on moving forward with Trey and Brock.
A s**tty rain game and and injury can't change things too much.
I think they still believe in Trey but again have the luxury of Purdy being so damn good that Lance still stays the no.2 but could be a weapon at times and if Purdy falters he is going in.
Don't know what the plan will be for Darnold, I think he was signed wit the expectation Purdy would miss a bunch of games so he will be #3 and just have to take it.

So it makes me wonder...who or what is the incentive of making the competition seem closer than it is?
Is the 9ers FO trying up Sam's stock for a potential trade?
Is it other teams getting in the ear of the national media to try to somehow lower Trey's trade value? That seem ridiculous.
Is it just beneficial for the 9ers if the perception is that both are doing "well"... that they seem to be having a close competition?
the front office said something to get him to sign here
'like if u sign the backup positon is yours". you know shady stuff.
People that our covering TC are saying lance is the best QB OUT THERE.

I'm still not convinced that all of the Niners brass were completely sold on Trey Lance. Why did they allow his to start the season at QB? They were almost brow beaten into starting him after giving up so much draft capital to land him. Yes Trey started but you could sense the huge amount of trepidation coming from the coaches....heck it was written all over Kyle's face!
When Trey did get injured and Jimmy replaced him, you could tell there was a massive sense of relief from the coaches and the locker room. Then the whole Purdy thing happened and that put Trey further behind the 8 ball.
I feel bad for Trey. I also think that it's unfortunate that he was ever drafted by the Niners. Why? I'm not convinced that he's a good fit for Kyle's offense. Using a golf analogy, the short game is not Trey's strength and I doubt it ever will be.
Will Trey ever get a chance to prove what he can do with this team? Perhaps. But it will take an injury to Purdy for him to get his chance. So who knows what the tea leaves have to store for Trey.
Sadly, the Niners botched this draft pick and even more sad, they still have no idea what to do with him other than keep him as an insurance policy in case Purdy does get injured.

Trey was given the QB1 role with no competition last season so he had his chances. He just didn't capitalized, unlike Brock.

this is an often overlooked point, when your number is called, you have to ball. You can't go 5 qtrs, with zero TDs. So that opened it up for BP, and BP was on fire the whole year. NFL = not for long. TL has chances still, but he has to play well. Let's see a new an improved TL in preseason, he can make the whole league take notice if he is out there throwing lasers on Sunday, lighting it up. 3-4 real darn good QBs, would be a good prob to have

Unless Brock isn't healthy, otherwise there is almost zero chance from the start of the training camp for Trey to the starting job. You can't win based on training camp reps, joint practice reps, and preseason, when you know Brock played exceptionally well last season including playoff while Trey had not proven anything yet.
That is why Kyle did what he did, handed Brock the QB1 role. The team doesn't owe Trey a so call "fair chance".

Jimmy G didn't score TD in the freaking playoff game and you were his number one fan.

I try to do a good post about hoping we have 3-4 good QBs, and you hit me with the sour grapes from years ago
