I mostly agree... the operating word in your post being 'if'.

It's not impossible we aren't back to the drawing board at the most important position after this season though. I think it's unlikely, but that would be a disaster. We could already be there if we didn't seemingly hit the lottery with a 7th round pick.

Great post!

Do you think we would have been forced to resign Jimmy G to a mega contract while letting guys walk, while not being able to bring in top F/A players?

even if it goes sideways, QB is still the hardest position to fill. i don't think anyone should be getting fired for making that gamble, especially when the rest of the team is a SB caliner team

I think we were rightfully done with Jimmy G after this season, and I also think he wanted out.

More likely we would have looked to make a roster altering trade for one of the veterans that were available. We wouldn't have had a lot of options or flexibility. That was the risk we took on with the '21 trade.

It could have a cascading or domino effect on the team. It's extremely unlikely we're competing for Super Bowls without at least average QB play (Jimmy level) in addition to the great roster we have. We handicapped our ability to bolster the roster going forward with the '21 trade and that would be compounded if we were left in a position to use even more capital on the QB position.

We already saw a glimpse of this in the '21 and '22 seasons.

He's not a project, just injured

Dude, you always have the worst takes...how in the world is a glorified high school QB who has basically never played meaningful time in college or the NFL NOT a project.

That's not characterizing it's just a fact. He's more of a project than the last pick of the 7th round was for the 49ers. It's just the truth.

yes anything can happen. thats why we love this sport! but we've had avg QB play in 19, 21 and 22.. with a SB and two NFCCG appearances. We are kicking extremely unlikely's ass

not sure how much bolstering some of those draft picks moved would help get us over the hump when QB is the issue. This year and next we should be drafting in our core rounds. i think we won't drop off too much as long as our QBs stay healthy

If he's not a project then his production should stand as to who he is in this league...a career 54% passer.

That's what I was saying... we need at least that. It's extremely unlikely to be in the position we're in with less. That's a possible downside of the '21 trade: to not only get worse at the position, but also limit your ability to compensate for it.

We could be staring at this reality now if not for Brock Purdy's emergence. Imagine spending 3 1st round picks and change on the position to improve from Jimmy G, relying on Jimmy G for two more years, and then having to drop 30 ish million on Derek Carr, or even more money plus trade compensation for Lamar Jackson... Not great to say the least.

I'm not trashing the kid...he's just a kid who had no control over where he was picked and the expectations that come with it.

That was all on SF and their odd trade up has a lot of back story we won't be privy to until a 30 for 30 comes out like 20 years from now.

It was dicey from the get go and has never looked dumber than right now but ya know what.... this team STINKS in the first round anyhow.

Literally everyone on this board except for a select few would have picked Bosa because it was a no brainer. So I don't count that, although I'm supremely thankful they didn't go Quinnen Williams which I was terrified of.

Beyond him and Aiyuk, they've been a complete mess in the first round. Second round they got deebo which I loved even at the time, but hell, even there it's been questionable.

For one reason or another, this team's sweet spot is mid to late rounds. So while I hate the trade for Lance, I can't say they'd do anything good with those picks anyhow.

Don't @ me, @ Javon Kinlaw, Solomon Thomas, Reuben Foster, Mike McGlinchey....who else am I missing?

Results of the picks traded for Lance.

The only thing that has receded more than Lance's trade value is his hairline.

Thought I was gonna get more traction on this joke ^^^^^ Is this mic on?

It is not "just the truth". It is just your opinion.

Regarding your other comment, Lance took his team to the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game and was named the MVP.

Trying to compare the 2021 Trey Lance draft and this draft is silly. There was a lot more supply and demand going on in that draft for QBs. That was considered one of the best QB drafts of all time. In hindsight was it? Probably not, but you're not putting yourself in the mindset at the time. Plus brand new HCs almost always make big splash trade ups in their first draft. I believe we did it. Robert Saleh and the Jets did it during his first draft. Now Demeco did it for that LB. It's not "the same for less" type of situation.

Shanahan and Lynch took a gamble in 2021. It was an unprecedented trade-up. I commend the attempt and I still think it can work out. Give the kid a chance.

49ers gave up:

#12 (2021)
#29 (2022)
#102 (2022)
#29 (2023)

Texans:

#12 (2023)
#33 (2023)
2024 1st
2024 3rd

How on earth is that "wayyyy" less? If the Texans don't make the playoffs next season it's actually "wayyyy" more.

The luxury? I don't see any rings.

They traded all those assets without even knowing who they wanted to draft. Months in advance. To draft maybe the 3rd best QB prospect.

Independent of whether the pick panned out, that is f**king insanity.
