Los Angeles Chargers QB Trey Lance Thread

I really do wish trey had Jimmy's quick release. Trey seems to take 1.5 hours to make up his mind, set and throw. It might be something that will get quicker with more playing time, but it's clearly never going to be a strength of his.

He's shown flashes. But he needs to be better. I know its impossible to imagine a 22 year old QB improving.

We agree Jimmy can't finish. What will it take for Lance to change your mind? A SB win? Better stats than Jimmy? More wins in a season than Jimmy?

He has to take the team further than Jimmy took the team to prove his value in the long run.
Before any of that he needs to prove he can stay healthy for more than 2 games in a row.

Don't you think Lance and Shanny will have something to prove? That was the point of it all.

I think they are up to it.

My confidence meter was 80% of that to begin the season.

Now it's 40%, just due to the multitude of reasons for Lance missing most of the last three full seasons and the lost development.

Shanahan has to win a SB, either this team or with Lance. He also needs to improve his record, he's literally a 0.500 coach, and he's not held to that standard around the league.

Jimmy only returns with a SB victory, new SF contract, and some trade scenario for Lance.

Lance will be presumptive starter in 2023 (unless we win SB), and will only have one season to prove he's not worth replacing. Another injury would be very detrimental.

Hey if I am making anyone laugh I'll take it

Got any TL takes or just about posters?

There is not a lot of positive to say. That's the problem.

I've heard the bolded mentioned several times now and no one seems to want to explain their reasoning. This post is to the webzone not a meant to be a direct attack or assumption of your posts NinerButf.

How come some think Jimmy should only return if he wins the super bowl? That's the only variable that matters?

The problem I have with this is that it aligns with the weird Jimmy ideology that's so prevalent on this forum. It's this belief that if the team wins, you shouldn't discuss Jimmy's performance or you're labeled a hater or ungrateful. If the team loses, we'll be sure to blame other aspects of the team, in which the offensive line or Kyle Shanahan are the main scapegoats, if not blamed equally with Jimmy's performance, even more so.

It just seems like a 49ers fan, of all people, should be able to recognize how often this team has won without having to rely on elite QB play. We've won multiple playoff games with less than 12 completions. That's not Jimmy's fault by any means, but if any team could win it all without an amazing QB performance or even a poor QB performance, it's this team.

The main reason why this bugs me is that I could potentially see a scenario in which Jimmy looks like a better QB going into the offseason without even making the playoffs, than another scenario in which he wins it all. The way he performs is the only thing that should matter in regards to his future with the team. It just seems par for the course that people will declare a SB win to be the only factor in predicting the future of our QB room.

The context in which how this team wins football games and the context in which Jimmy potentially plays this postseason is apparently irrelevant to a lot of posters even though there's another scenario in which we win the super bowl with Jimmy, but Trey's still the better QB in 2023 and beyond.

Only in this 49erswebzone echo chamber could you potentially run a "who would you rather keep" poll about Jimmy vs Kyle Shanahan, in which 49ers fans would be surprisingly be split in their decisions and 99% of the outside world would be 100% on Kyle's side.

Only on the webzone could you praise Jimmy during a week the offense scored 14 points (Atlanta) and have still be called a hater. Which is exactly what happened to me.

The point is, we have to get back to valuing some semblance of objective analysis. There's going to be posters who blame Jimmy and/or Trey for everything and you should either block them or ignore them so that that doesn't mean we should abandon player evaluations. The act of winning the super bowl alone does not predict who's the best QB for this team going forward. Period.

the point was something to prove..? the point made here is they have to get farther.. but we blamed the defense.. so it's up to the defense if we want fair comparisons

Unless Jimmy can prove otherwise (and he'll never have a better offense around him as now), I do not believe he can win a championship.

I have medium confidence that Shanahan can do it.

And I have medium-low confidence Lance can do it.

Ultimately it comes down to winning a SB. This year could be it, and it could be related to a down year in the conference and getting lucky. Or Jimmy could take another step. But I suspect we'll lose either in the NFCCG or SB with Jimmy.

And then you ask yourself, should we run it back again, he was so close?!

If we want the same results.

He hasn't played much football in the last couple of years. It might be too late for him to develop. I think he will be traded when he gets off IR
