think of it this way. If the Dolphins picked trey at #3 and THEN we traded the 2021, 2022 and 2023 picks for him we would end up with the same result.
We USED 3 1sts to acquire Lance we swapped 12 for 3, we traded two future 1sts.
You are correct NY. We traded 2022 1st and 2023 1st (plus a 3rd rounder) in order to move up from 12 to 3. i.e. the "cost" of moving from 12 to 3 was two firsts and a 3rd, not three first's. We definitely "used" 3 first's. No idea why so many people can't grasp that concept. Maybe it's just semantics?
Nope. Read second paragraph from NFL.com.
"The Niners essentially placed their future in Lance's hands, sending three first-round picks to Miami for the right to select the dynamic, dual-threat quarterback. San Francisco doesn't have a first-round pick until 2024 and is also out a third-rounder in 2022."
Sent, traded, swapped, used, whatever other adjective you want to toss out there, 3 of them were utilized.
>>>>Sent, traded, swapped, used, whatever other adjective you want to toss out there, 3 of them were utilized.
Correct, but not relevant since no-one is debating that. Of course we used three first's. The cost of moving up nine spots in the draft ( increasing the value of our existing 1st for a better 1st ) was two additional first's and a 3rd. We used all of them for Lance. Or if you prefer the way it was written by NFL.com, we sent three firsts AND GOT A HIGHER FIRST RETURNED BACK, and all three firsts were used in the pick. Net cost to move up was 2 firsts and a 3rd.....total picks used was 3 first's and a 3rd. It's not rocket science.
True, instill think the Niners could have had him at their Original spot. Fields was going to Chicago no matta what, least I think so, and I don't think Belicheck would have drafted him.
Lawrence and Wilson were locks for 1&2. That's just spilled milk though, I guess. Long as he pans out. Fingers crossed.
Maybe, that is an expensive Rumor and a helluva gamble. If he pans out it doesn't even matter anyway. I'm in the school of thought that he will. Can't wait to see him in action!
Not even just the falcons but you also had Rumours of Carolina and Denver being interested in him as well.
Ok, I just think they jumped the gun. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time! Excited to see him play tho!
You're wrong. It's ok to admit![]()
Reports were out there even before the 49ers made their move up that if someone wanted Trey Lance they would need to get to 3. Don't recall which guy was really adamant about the Falcons being infatuated with him.
And the fact is considering we drafted him at 3 and there was no major shock means other teams were seeing the same things that Shanahan and our guys were seeing. I know as fans we have this thought that cuz some guys were projected around pick X in most mock drafts or they come from a school without a ton of publicity that they should go around pick X and anytime a team takes a player higher than pick X in the draft they reached and if they get the player after pick X they got a steal.
Fact is NFL teams know more than we do. Obviously they're not batting 1.000 either but they get a much better look at these kids than we do, that's why you get guys who fall and guys who make big jumps from their projections every draft.
In some cases the teams "reaching" get a stud player and the "steals" turn into nobodies. Here's hoping Trey Lance is a steal and a stud when his career is all said and done...and hopefully that career won't be said and done for a good 20+ years.
It was also "Reported" that Kyle had two 2nd rounders in hand to trade for Jimmy. Reports are smoke signals and false alarms most of the time and reporters with diahreah of the mouth.
Nothing legit to report, but gotta report something. Or teams putting false info out there to force their adversaries into a bad decision.
I also hope he pans out and plays well but I'm am also keeping an eye on Justin Fields. I wanted that guy so bad, I thought we messed up the pick. Time will tell! Cautiously optimistic!
Sure all reports aren't facts and we'll never know especially when it comes to the draft but all you can do is read the tea leaves.
It's a major assumption that a QB who was deemed good enough to go #3 overall by a very picky offensive minded HC like Shanahan would've actually dropped to 12th overall pick if the 49ers stayed put. Especially when you had several teams who could've gone with a QB. All of these teams either had a major QB need or could've easily gone with a QB if the right one was on the board as they had an aging QB or unproven one.
Clear QB needs:
Carolina
Denver
Chicago
New England
Washington
Aging/unproven or mediocre QB teams:
Atlanta
Miami
Detroit
Philly
It takes just one of those teams to take Lance either at the pick they had ahead of us or if it's a team picking after in a trade up. Some people think just cuz no QB went from pick 4-10 that Lance would've been there for us at 12 but there is 0 proof behind that. Teams for the most part understand the interest at the top of the first round. You never know but you have a decent idea. 49ers don't make that move up unless they had clear evidence they weren't likely to get their guy at 12.
Regardless of all that. He's here now. Let's hope 5 years, 10 years or whenever from now he's the best pick in this class.
