Simms is weird with this stuff...Dude loved Jackson who played in a spread offense that was chalk full of half field reads and one and go stuff. His accuracy was not as good as Lance's (and neither were elite there). He loved him because he was an elite athlete that had potential.

He loved Josh Allen who was pure speculation/potential coming out of Wyoming. He wasn't close to accurate and had all kinds of mechanical issues. His last season was not good in college. Simms like him because he had a rocket arm and was big lol. I would like Simms more if he stayed consistent with what he values in QB prospects.

Trey Lance is nowhere near the explosive athlete as either of those guys to be fair. I guess Simms thinks the running part of their game made them better. Simms could also just be pulling the Florio "say anything outrageous for clicks" b******t.

I don't think that's an accurate statement.

He's not as explosive an athlete as Lamar but he's more athletic than Allen. He just doesn't have as big of an arm as Josh.

Both look much more explosive running the ball. I think folks that think Trey is going to be an explosive runner are in for a real disappointment. Trey is not a good runner, looks like a slow Kaepernick running the ball.

Good. We need a guy that is mobile enough that he uses his legs as the last resort to extend plays not constantly breaks play calls.

If anything, I hope he realizes he cannot outrun NFL LBs so he doesn't use his scrambling as a crutch so often. Make the reads and get rid of the ball. Plan B is to check it down. Plan C is to use his legs to extend the play. The sooner he realizes that his best option is to throw the ball, the quicker he will develop that aspect of of his game. If he finds a bunch of early success running around like a chicken and making off script plays, the more he will rely on that early in his career. Scramble drill plays make for nice highlights, but doesn't make for a developed pocket passer. The other factor is whether this OL can protect him adequately so that he can actually remain in the pocket.

All that will come and work it's way out with playing time.

What's a slow Kaepernick???

There is no way Josh Allen is more explosive running the ball. Allen isn't Tom Brady but he's not explosive. He's got decent speed but most of his runs are due to his size than his speed. Very similar to Trey in that regard and as Trey gets used to NFL speed he'll be much more confident running the ball.

Not sure how you can watch both guys and think Lance isn't more explosive than Josh.

Allen is extremely explosive considering his size. Go watch his games last year vs pats

Trey is not a burner - but, he's still very nimble.

The sooner he can move off this mentality, the better. That's when the growth will happen.

"I appreciate when I can play how I play and be off schedule."
Can't away for the overreacting on either side or the spectrum after the first reported OTA of 2022.

Nah, that's part of what makes him special. A ton of young QBs succeed wary in their careers because they CAN play off schedule and make s**t happen. Learning the nuances of playing in the pocket takes time.

This is right. However, I was hoping for someone more of the steve young type runner, not the most athletic, but who knows when to escape, and finds the lanes, and was somewhat elusive. I dont know what it was last year, but trey's running was just disapointing. Getting stuffed at the goalline, being tackled short of first yard markers, not getting any movement after the initial hit. Just flat out out-muscled when he was initially hit, and falling immediately. Tumbling into his lineman, almost tearing mcglichey's acl at one point. This isnt something that gets better with snaps, except for maybe learning how to slide.

Agreed it takes time and reps. But the more reps he has where he is quick with his decision and quick with his release, the faster he will develop that aspect of his game. The more he finds success off script, the more he may resort to that - I'm speculating here. While the off-script explosive play might result in a better outcome within the game, it does not add experience to pocket passing.
