Add to all that...if Trey stuck around one more year in college....
I look at it being able to get the #1 overall pick in 2022 draft... I'm sure he would have went #1 overall in this upcoming draft.
No way one of these teams that would have ended up with the #1 pick, would have traded out of their spot to us or anyone.
We just took an educated gamble and grabbed him early.
NDSU was undefeated last year with a lesser QB, so Lance being #1 pick this year would be extremely possible.

He definitely would have gone 1st this year.

And you know this how? More magical thinking from the Trey Lance is god crowd. I hope the kid turns out to be great but all of this oohing and aahing based on ten quarters of okay football really is a bit much.

Tell me a better QB prospect with his tangibles and skill set? This draft has a weak QB class and no doubt a team would have fell in love with him and traded up for him.

100% agree. That and the fact our success this season pushed the pick down, solid deal.

I seriously hope Trey is a beast.

I think he will eventually get there. The question is whether it is after a year of learning like Mahomes, or two or so years of playing like Josh Allen. Just to clarify, I'm not saying he's necessarily going to be a carbon copy of either of those guys. (I think as long as Trey reaches his potential and becomes the best Trey he can be it will be more than sufficient.) I'm just using there development patterns as an example.

trust in KS to develop trey...the 2nd half v HOU was just the beginning

Agree! He has a ton of physical talent and his intangibles look like the real deal. Houston was just the beginning. Keep in mind his head coach is a genius. Look what his head coach did for QBs with limited physical abilities.

So, something that is completely unprovable and unknowable outside the realm of the hypothetical is an absolute certainty. Got it.

Let's look at what Trey Lance really did cost us, now that we have a good idea. Three first's and a third? Lets look.

We used our 1st round pick at 12 worth 1200 points, and got a 3rd overall talent (we sure hope) at 2200 points, and that's it for last year. We're 1000 points to the good.

Now we lose a 29 to 32 overall pick, worth approximately 600 points, and a third round pick at the bottom, worth approximately 125 points. That leaves us 275 points to the good.

Next year, I'm just gonna say we've got the talent because we convert Jimmy's cap money to our stars and we're in the final 4 again, so we lose another 600 points. That puts us 325 points in the hole.

What are we going to get for Jimmy? Safe to say, he goes to a team in the bottom half of the pile. Let's just say we get only a second rounder for him. Bottom half team gets a top half pick, so mid top half of the second round is 500 points. That puts us up 175 points.

What was is it worth to have Lance the backup on the roster this year? He won one, and lost one to Arizona, while Kyle said he played good enough to win. He did. The whole team cost us that game against a very tough team. But had we lost his win, which is more than likely with the back up qb's we had before Trey, we don't go to the playoffs, and we don't have a chance at a Super Bowl now. What's that worth? For this year, PRICELESS! If we win 6, FOREVER!

Bottom line, to simplify for those that don't want to wrap their brains around this, you can give up several 600 point picks to get a 2200 point quarterback.

Let's go get 6, and then three peat, and don't ever look back.

Great breakdown! So excited for Trey Lance & this offense next season, but as you said let's go get #6 now!

Trey going #1 overall this draft is a hypothetical scenario. But so is claiming anything about Trey Lance at this point. Including the common narrative that Lance wouldn't have brought this team to the playoffs or that we would have "wasted this season" starting a rookie. It goes both ways and I feel like it's pretty hypocritical of 81 because I'm pretty sure he's agreed with at least one of those sentiments.
It's not being stated as a hypothetical though is it. It is being stated as a fact. There is a difference between those two concepts you know.

What difference is that? It was stated as a fact that Trey Lance starting would result in a wasted season.

One very popular poster even said, "anyone who wants Lance to start this year doesn't want to win"

It's the exact same thing.
