How soon/When can Shanahan start working with Trey Lance?
The above videos are auto-populated by an affiliate.
It could be said that by not picking a QB this year would have given a better argument to replace the coach, due to a lack of vision. To me the whole process of picking Lance, or another QB, demonstrates a willingness to control their own destiny, what we would hope to see in a top level coaching staff.Kyle has the recipe, he just needs the ingredients.

I am getting tired of reading posts talking about firing Shanahan. The draft is something of a lottery. The whole of football knows this. By trading up and going for the guy with the highest ceiling, the team have done what they can to improve the odds on success. Personally Shanahan and Lynch have gone up in my estimation for identifying the problem and taking great steps to deal with it.

Top head coaches are hard to come by. Surely the two decades prior to the hiring of Shanahan shows that? Success in the NFL comes from finding a top coach, surrounding him with high calibre people and then being patient. If this pick turns out to have been a mistake, it was a failure of action rather than inaction. Having seen so many posters calling for Shanahan to be fired if they drafted Jones, it becomes clear now that sacking people has become the immediate response to setbacks. This is not in my opinion a recipe for anything other than mediocrity .

Fields and Jones also face the possibility of failure.

Here is part of it

I asked him: How did you know it should be Lance?

"It's so hard for me to give a quick answer," Shanahan said from California.

"His natural ability to play the quarterback position, just in terms of how he plays in the pocket, how he can go through the progressions, how, when no one's open, that he gives it a chance, that he recognizes it. And how quick he reacts to turning it into an off-schedule play. He plays on tape like he's a very poised, smart person who's been playing the position for a while.

"Then you look into the other attributes, and you're like 'Oh, I haven't even gotten to the running skill set.' I haven't gotten to the upside of how much better he can get, the more he plays. That's what made me like him so much right away.

"But it's also, once you do that, you see all this, now let's talk about what's wrong. Why isn't this a slam dunk? You hear his school [level of play], the lack of throws, not playing the 2020 season. Those are real things. That's why I'm glad that we had a long time to go through it. Because you love the tape, but just like everyone in the league, there are some stuff you can't just say it's a slam dunk. That's the stuff that worries you about it. But that's what was so cool about the kid, that going through this process after we moved up to where I talked to him so many times, to have him go through the number of tests and stuff that we have them all go through . . . I can't tell you how special of a person he is. It has nothing to do with football.

"He's extremely intelligent. He knows how to handle situations. He knows how to carry himself. The guy that I see on tape that I tried to describe that I see such a natural quarterback, such a smart player. Well, if I never saw the tape, and I got to hang out with him first, I would've felt that same way with him as a person and been like, 'Man, I hope the tape matches this person!' You know? That's kind of what was cool about it. The first time you watch the tape, 'Man, hell yeah!' But no decision's set in stone in January. That's how I felt in January when I saw him. But I was going to do the process right. Watch everybody. Every guy. I can always spend two hours and get myself to like anyone. Then, I go to the time getting myself to not like him. And I see what ends up sticking. That's what was cool about him through the process at the end. No matter what I tried to do to say, It's too risky!, all that stuff kind of went away the more I got to know the person. I went back to how I originally felt about the tape."

The kid is so unbelievably mature for his age. Poised. Humble. He almost has the feel he grew up in a very strong strict military home.

This probably has been posted already but it's 3 hours long. For the evaluators, push it to your TV and just "watch the tape" yourself.

That was an epic disaster.Tua, somewhat like Jones needs a very specific O system for him. Were they going anywhere anyway with Firzdissapearing act?? Trey shouldn't sit the entire season, hasen't played in forever. Luckily Jimmy will get lost in the pocket and prob end up with Williams falling on him, lacerating his liver. Then Rosen will come in and throw 3 picks in the second quarter. Oh no, who's left????🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

when you sit you still practice. And thats what he needs practice reps for a year.

Also we are far more likely to win a SB this year with Jimmy G than Lance. It would take exponential growth from a prospect most thought who would already need to sit a year to even make it to the SB and even the most pro ready qbs dont do that well in rookie year

lol but you know they're the Bama of their division When's the last time Bama lost 3 games in a yr? I want to say their QB(s) have like 10 or 11 INTs so far too

End of the day talent is talent.
NC this is why we can't trust the media or point out what MM and the Peter King's of the world have said.

Like some have said echo-chambering is a real thing...it's like that Telephone Game we played as kids lol.

I hope we learned a valuable lesson that nobody really knows what is going on here outside of Kyle and John.

Pretty much, you kinda end up looking silly end of the day...they don't leak and if they do it's usually for a reason. Fans just need to accept that they won't know s**t until it happens lol.

I can definitely see the latter, but I'm not sure about Luck unless he were to really cleanup and tighten his mechanics/footwork. Is it possible for Lance to reach Luck's level? I think they're playstyles are different even if Lance were to reach his ceiling.

Scouting Trey Lance: North Dakota State QB similar to Andrew Luck

Could North Dakota State QB Trey Lance be the next Steve McNair?

I think the obvious comparison to make for Lance is Josh Allen. That is not to say he will or wont be as good as Allen. Lance has to work on the consistency with his accuracy. But IMO Josh Allen is by far his best comparison out of any NFL player who has ever played. especially from a physical standpoint. From their builds, running ability, and Arm strength. Very close/similar in those areas.

I'd actually make the case for a cam Newton comparison. He was a great dual threat QB prospect coming out of college with nice size.

EWWWWW Scam sucks at throwing the ball. Lance has a way better ball than Scam.

They lost a flood of talent to the draft or the transfer portal because of the canceled fall season. Besides Lance they lost Dillon Raddunz, Jabril Cox to the draft. Some guys like Cox had transfered and the star QB that they were able to bring in via transfer wasn't eligible to play this spring season.

They'll bounce back in the fall.

I agree with this. Bill Walsh was a huge advocate of giving QBs time to sit and take in the pro game. If Garoppolo's healthy then I think you roll with him, especially after upgrading the OL. You maximize his trade value and don't put any added pressure on Lance to have to run out there right away, maybe use him in some packages that can help boost his confidence but not overwhelming him by throwing too much at him at once. Meanwhile Garoppolo has all the incentive in the world to ball out and show himself to be a QB that several teams will put near the top of their lists.

KC with Alex Smith and Mahomes was a pretty perfect outcome for QB development. That whole year was seemingly good for both players

Yep. There is just no downside to this, for the team, for Garoppolo and for Lance.
