lol what? Just because NDSU ran more snaps from under center than most colleges doesn't mean Lance can run 50% of Kyle's incredibly complex playbook from day 1. He has only attempted 318 passes since high school. Most college QB prospects have over 1,000 entering the draft. He is the most raw, inexperienced young QB ever drafted in the 1st round.

I definitely think he can catch up, but he needs to sit and learn for this entire season for sure. He's incredibly smart, so let him study this year and get in on a few plays designed for him to get his feet wet. We should follow the exact blueprints the Chiefs used with Alex Smith and Mahomes.

I get that he was older and did have more college experience, but Wentz actually only started for two seasons at NDSU. If he impressed the Eagles enough learning their offense to trade Bradford during preseason I don't understand why Trey wouldn't be capable of doing the same.

Starting an entire 2nd season is huge.
Florio really did sound butt-hurt - essentially claiming that Shanahan is a liar because Florio thinks that he would just come out and say that whoever the 9ers picked at #3 was who they were focused on all along. And then the nonsense about it being Frank Gore's take that was the thing that got them to choose Lance. What BS.

To me, in retrospect, what Shanahan said they did made perfect sense. After they went after Watson and that didn't work out, it just made sense that Kyle had moved off of his preference for Ryan/Cousins type QB's (if he actually ever had a big preference that way) and wanted a QB that would add more to what Kyle could do with his offense. JG is just injured too much and limited in his big play ability. With the pursuit of Watson I think they became comfortable with the idea of giving up a lot of draft capital to get that more capable QB so when Watson fell though I think they decided - well, hell, let's use that draft capital to get that more mobile QB. The obvious choices that would still be available at #3 were Lance and Fields and I think they would have been comfortable taking either at #3 but I believe Kyle when he says he was leaning toward Lance early on. But there were a lot of question marks about Lance so they decided to dig into Lance more to make sure that they were comfortable that he was a better choice than Fields. And I believe him that he saw Jones as a reasonably good choice if for some reason both Lance and Fields fell short in their evaluation for some reason (I think Kyle figured Jones was probably good enough that he could ride with him into the playoffs even if he wasn't as good a prospect as Lance or Fields).

About Gore's observations about Lance - I have this notion (which could be a goofy notion) that Gore always had the ability to "be in the moment" where he could sense the other players and what they were doing quicker than anyone else on the field. I think it's a gift that few players have. Russell Wilson often gets there but not as consistently as Gore. I think it comes before he even has time to process things in terms of his X's and O's understanding of the play. It's like a near instantaneous "feel" he has for what is going on around him. And I think Gore recognized that Lance has that trait, too. It's like he's often a half moment ahead of the other players in sensing how things are unfolding around him. I'm not sure that makes sense to anyone else but before I read about Gore's take on Lance I had taken notice that Lance had that ability that I had been seeing in Gore.

Oh, and f**k Florio.

I'm talking about Aaron and Love... Aaron played so well (as you should know) that Green Bay couldn't make any excuses to insert LOVE for some playing time..

NO ONE is going to like it if JG wins us a Super Bowl and be the league MVP then gets replaced by a 2nd year QB with a very high POTENTIAL..

First of all while I'm still a fan of Jimmy as a person and a player... he's not Aaron Rodgers and Lance isn't Love who wasn't even the Packers 2nd string QB.

Second IF Jimmy plays well enough to win league MVP his trade value would clearly be at his peak and we'd move his ass in a second.

Rodgers also didn't win the SB.

hahahahah... OK OK !! that would be an awesome move !!

Instead of looking at it as JG may have finally arrived, after winning league MVP, you going to trade the guy??? WHY, because you drafted a QB 3rd overall with a bigger body and can run around as well as spin the ball like KC's #15 ???

He is, Maiocco said he was meeting with Scangarello last night to go over concepts and get the playbook.

Yup. Shanahan said that he was in the building yesterday to meet with Scangarello to get a head start and grab some homework before they come back for mini-camp in a couple of weeks.

I mean it's literally called the Quest for 6, if we win the Superbowl with Jimmy it's great. His contract is still affordable next year, so he stays and has a competition again with Trey.

He'd have to win another one to get a new contract, and again, who is going to complain about back to back titles and having the most Superbowl wins as a team?

If at that point we'd probably pay Jimmy and trade Trey, but do we really think that's going to happen? I love Jimmy but staying healthy for two straight years would be just as impressive as back to back Superbowls!

They aren't going to pay Jimmy $26 million or whatever in 2022. That's one of the reasons they picked a Qb. They have a lot of free agents to sign again next year. Most of the guys signed one year deals this year. If they make the playoffs or win the SB you can bet they're going to want more money and longer deals. They will need to extend Warner and probably Bosa next year and they won't be cheap. Trading Jimmy and getting a #1 or maybe a #2 pick and freeing up that money is a must. That's why so many teams are going with young QBs. Of course a lot depends on how long it takes Lance to get up to speed.
He's still in Santa Clara looking at his IG so yah he's definitely hitting the playbook
