Depends if they sign any free agents and what they sign them for.

I understand letting him go. Between Deebo/Hurd/Bourne plus whatever stud WR the Niners draft at 13, the Niners will be looking good at the receiver position.
If the Niners didn't have the #13 pick in a draft loaded with WR talent, I'd probably be more concerned. But I think they're going to get one of Jeudy/Lamb/Ruggs.

But honestly, this really pisses me off.
Was two years,16 mil too much for us to pay? Or, was a possible 3rd round comp pick the goal all along?

It is still a shame to see him go. It cost a lot to get him and the locker room liked him.
I just hope Hurd is ready to go. Until he injured his back I thought he was stronger then Deebo in the pre season last year.
But it will be good bye Pettis and most likely Goodwin. Most likely it will be Deebo, Bourne, Hurd and a Draft pick.

They didn't trade him. He was a free agent and could sign anywhere he wanted. I liked Sanders and had hoped he would be back but I think Samuel has sort of supplanted him in the team's eyes and they are still looking at the return of Taylor and Hurd. I can only assume that their decision to not actively work to retain Sanders has a lot to do with how they view the potential contributions of those two guys coming off IR. Also I don't know that Sanders was their best play maker. I think Samuel and obviously Kittle are a lot more dynamic with the ball in their hands. Though Sanders is clearly no slouch in that department he has a less physical style which is maybe what the team is looking for and what they might believe they have in Hurd.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents ("CFA") than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. No club may receive more than four compensatory picks in any one year. If a club qualifies for more than four compensatory picks after offsetting each CFA lost by each CFA gained of an equal or higher value, the four highest remaining selections will be awarded to the club.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement limits the number of compensatory selections to the number of clubs then in the League (32).

Sanders served his purpose - at 33, it was just too much, with guys coming back and a high draft pick.

Yeah that's true. I thought he was a couple of years younger but 33 is getting close to the end for a runner

I also wonder if this is a sign that they feel Hurd is healthy.

Before we get too upset. The thought of having Deebo and Ruggs or Lamb on the field at the sametime with Kittle at TE, We can't complain too much about that. And if Hurd is healthy, having him as a #3 and Bourne as a #4 is pretty darn good. Maybe they felt there wasn't much room for Sanders on next season's team, And that $8 Million per year for a role player is too much in the cap era. We have to trust that Kyle knows what he is doing and that he has a general idea of the team he is going to put on the field come September.
