WOW! Almost immediately after I had decided in my head this wasn't gonna happen and was one big smokescreen, the trade happened. Still praying Joe Staley sticks around another year and either he or McGlinchey slides inside for a season but not holding my breath.

Eh. If he walks, he will get big money. And thst means the niners will get a good comp pick for the 2022 draft.

So the value may equal out to a 5th.

This is a good point—one that I neglected to consider in my fly-off-the-handle, knee-jerk reaction lol.

A 3rd rounder next year. We get an experienced pro bowl tackle that knows the Shanahan system to replace an aging vet who will likely retire now and you're worried that we are mortgaging our future. To get this kind of talent for a 5th and 3rd round pick is awesome. They sure weren't going to find anything close to him in the rest of this draft and next year will be a crapshoot if there isn't a college season.
For what we gave up for him.................OUTSTANDING PICK UP!

A 3rd round pick isn't a mortgaged future. Good Lord.

Stanley has been great for our team.....if he wants to retire that's his business. I would guess that he's let our FO know what his plans are. He's a stand up guy and deserves tremendous respect...

How can anyone be pissed about that draft choice we gave up? Dude is already one of the best tackles in the game. So we use that draft choice HOPING that the pick is half as good as trent? This is such a win. Our FO is F'ing NAILS!

There's no way we make this trade if Staley isn't retiring. We can't afford to keep both. I'm sure Staley told Lynch awhile ago that he was retiring and Lynch told him to keep it quiet for a bit.
Wow this draft just went from a C- to an A lol.
Lets f**king too!!! I love our FO!! I hope Staley doesn't retire this year cause we are SB bound
Very nice pickup at a great price

Thing is Staley's contract is guaranteed now so it isn't like they get his money back if he retires. They are paying both unless there was some deal struck with Joe prior to April 1st.

If he retires, he doesn't get his money. The guaranteed only protects him from injury or getting cut.
So much love for staley. He gave his all for this franchise. Just wish they could have got him that ring.........

Williams cap number is $12.5 million vs $11.5 for Staley. About $5 million is dead cap money. If Joe retires they only owe the April signing bonus. If he stays then they have to do a restructure and spread the money out. Maybe the pay Joe over the next 5 or 6 years so he has a retirement income. I'm sure they have it figured out or they wouldn't have made the trade.
