He rarely helped out offense and defense with flipping the field position when we needed him. Our coverage didn't do any favors but wish didn't consistently either.

you need a punter to do more than just be able to drop it into the 20 when you have good field position to punt from.

He wasn't a bad punter but he wasn't anything special IMO. If he was some great talent that does stuff that others can't, he wouldn't have been cut. They'd of stashed him some where to let him heal up.

he has a lot of different punts he can unleash that typical punters do not. this is a punter who was getting turnovers from making life difficult on return men. there were times when they didn't even want to go near his punts. you don't stash specialists very often. you can either do the job or not. his back gave out.

it's a wrong statement. pat mcafee, before becoming a loud talking head, he spent his career punting in the league. he talks about the difference between someone just booting it hard (he mentioned andy lee) and someone like wish. it's like a pitcher who can throw 8 different pitches. someone like darvish. that's not common. i just chalk it up to a lot of fans simply don't understand or know he was doing it.

Absolutely this. You shouldn't be an NFL punter if you can't pin inside the 20 when punting from good field position. You also don't need to draft one with a fourth round pick to find one that can…… observe this season

But the thing is….you don't need 8 different punts to pin a team inside the 20…just one. And if you can't do that then you are not an NFL punter; especially from distances that Wish would punt from.

That said; I will give credit where credit is due. Wish did have some nice knuckle punts and different types of balls that were hard to field. But end results weren't an excessive fumble rate or anything and it was best to get the ball out of bounds inside the 20; which any NFL punter can and should be able to do.

Agreed. One thing that always stuck with me was his 2nd punt in the 4th quarter of Super Bowl 54. 40 yard punt that gave the chiefs the ball at the f**king 35 yard line. A 55+ yard bomb would've been clutch in that situation.

Can we finally admit that the guy wasn't worth a draft pick let alone a 4th rounder. That's the crux of the conversation about Wish.

Yup. There were multiple more times like that too where I was wishing Lee punted instead.

@Phoenix Andy Lee > Wish

this is an article from his tenure:

49ers P Mitch Wishnowsky induced Bengals fumbles with different punting styles

Wishnowsky has had 16 punts muffed or bobbled in his three-year career, with five coming this year and creating three turnovers. Wishnowsky's unique athletic background, as a longtime Australian rules football player, has given him plenty of practice with different types of kicks.

this guy was kicking his butt off, and it got to a point return men didn't want anything to do with him.

I agree, wish had some nice and tricky kicks that had benefits but that doesn't make him special or top tier. I'm not on here saying wish was trash and had nothing going for him, just that he wasn't a complete punter on a consistent basis.

it's like salivating over a qb who can throw the ball 90 yards but can't consistently hit the short throws with accuracy or consistently read defenses - it leaves a lot left to be desired.

I wish the dude the best and hope his back heals up. I don't like seeing anyone down like he is right now.

Kyle said this had nothing to do with health. He said Mitch'es back is fine. It was about getting a cheaper option at punter.

Hopefully he takes his a** back to the AFL and lives out the rest of his days in dignity like the great Aussie Jerrod Hayne!
He was good at pinning teams deep for most of his career. They got what they needed from him.
