You must have hated Pinion.
I'll grant you there have been longer punters since he was drafted but just for reference
Nett Avg yds 2019 2020 2021
Wishnowsky 41.6 42.1 42.7
Lee 42.6 39.6 41.9
Pinion 38.3 40.2 39.6
The FO got their upgrade at a rookie price.
And to prove how irrelevant punters can be Pinion now has a SB Ring.
You gotta a point contract wise with Lee but still we wasted that 4th round and you dont pay 3M$ 4 year rookie contract for a good punter that they could have signed as an undrafted one
Who was it then that they should have picked up?
I had Bailey and Wish on my list prior to the draft. Bellichick was playing with Lynch/Shanny and made them move up to get Mitch and he took Bailey in the 5th.
Bailey went nett avg
2019 41.3
2020 45.6
2021 42yds - Pro Bowl 2020. 4 Year deal $6.9M (Mitch is $3.75M)
On the street or FA there is only a handful that teams did pick up.(Nett avg Yds Bolded if better than Mitch):-
Ryan Winslow - 2019
44.2 on 6 punts, 2021 37.4yd on 16 punts.
Matt Wile - 2019
44.7 yds Career finished on TB practice squad (SB Champion)
Ty Long - 2019 40.9, 2020 35.9, 2021 39.3yds $575K Salary.
Bryan Anger - 2019 44.5, 2020 41.8, 2021 44.6yds, 31 year old in 2019 former Rnd 3 pick(2012) signed $1M contract. Pro Bowl 2021. Just signed $9M deal
Jamie Gillan - 2019 42.2, 2020 38.3, 2021 41.5yds, young Scotsman UDFA $565K salary
AJ Cole - 2019 39.4, 2020 40.1, 2021 42.5yds, 4 year $5.7M contract
Corey Wadman - 2019 39.4yds.
Who else on the street was there that all 9 teams with a need missed in 2019?
The stand out is former 3rd rounder Anger but at 31 years are you as FO picking him up? Hind sight is a beautiful thing.
Are you gambling on the Scotsman?
Are you going for average and below and overpaying on others?
Do you outwit Belichick and pick up Bailey?
What have your scouts told you and what have you seen in college tape etc?
Don't get me wrong, I am not defending the player but he did not pick himself in the 4th. Even though the 4th is a crap shoot.
There are still many questions to answer regarding the value of Wishnowsky but I am not seeing enough upside in the diffence between him and the others.
I hope for the team's sake the new coach brings out the value that the FO thought they had.
And also for the Seahags fans in here Michael Dickson who was Pro Bowl in his rookie year (2018) had signed a 4 year contract extension for $14.7M.
