Two things that are far easier to get better at than directional punting. He's obviously got the leg strength so I see kicking off being more a matter of adjusting his technique along with more reps as a holder.

He never claimed he was good at kicking off from a tee. You are right they are easy things to adjust to and he will by the main season.

His worst punting today was better then Pinion's best
Really solid debut.

Over 50 yard average (leg strength apparent)
3 punts inside the 20 including when we needed it most (clutch)
Touchback (but close and demonstrates his accuracy on directional punts)
Kick out of bounds
Poor kickoffs (surprising with his leg strength - this is a big one)
May have questions on holding for Gould

...got the nerves out of the way. Relax. Now work on consistency and these areas.

Not a weapon yet but he certainly has the ability.

His final punt of the night was really good.

The kick off action is a totally different action to punting which needs more swivel action/round the corner style to be great. Not sure if the coaches/Mitch are wanting/trying to get similar results from the kick off that he gets from punting? He might as well just kick it for a touch back.
Kickoffs... why must they always go through the endzone?
If he can get it to the 10 or 5 with good hang (and coverage), wouldn't that be preferable?

There appeared to be several teams last year that had coached kicking the ball high down near the goal line and daring the returner to bring it back. Most of the time they were successful in preventing the returner to cross the 20.

Maybe he's being told to keep the kickoffs short of the goal line. Coaches want to get reps for kickoff coverage. Can't do that when it's a touchback.
