I was glad when he left. One of the journalists who covered the team was talking about how fat he was at the end of that last season with us. Is that the kind of commitment you want?

There are other reasons. I think we have enough older receivers signed already. I think he's too close to Kyle which was a problem. Big ego too.

People are anchored to the idea that he is what he was when he was at his peak.
didn't he have diverticulitis? How is he even allowed to play anymore?

I've never heard of this. If we sign him, that would be kinda odd cause of the way our room is set up. I think we have 3 Bonafide starters in Evans, Pearsall, and Slot guy we signed.

I think Watkins a lot, I'm expecting him to develop and then we have cowing that's always been hurt. If those two are healthy - they should be pretty awesome additions and add speed.

id rather add a young talent to develop instead of a 3rd old guy on an expiring contract
What would Bill Walsh do?

Probably trade Trent Williams. lol "get rid of them a year early instead of a year late".

I hope and think we will keep Trent. Our poor o line needs all the help it can get

Walsh in his two years as GM 99-00 kept 37-38 year old Jerry rice as a starter on the roster. I all seriousness though he did value role specific players at any age and thats Deebo on this team to a tee and he just turned 30 so he's not ancient just not young.

Walsh actually used a similar philosophy on the o/l, late round picks and UDFA's. Only he had BM as his o-line coach and that was the difference, our ability to develop guys back then was superior.

Not only did he have coach Bobb but the league rules were different back then. The Niners employed a blocking technique that was often criticized and is now illegal. Wlash didn't draft many OL early. Barton was the only 1st rounder in 1987. He also drafted Jeff Bregal that year in round 2 but he was released quickly because of off field roid rage issues. Bubba Paris was taken in round 2 in 1982. McIntyre in round 3 (1984). Steve Wallace was taken in the 4th round of ther 1986 draft.

Five guys in a 7 season span and only 4 were starters. Only 2 in the first 2 rounds. Kyle has had a very similar draft. He's picked an OL in the 1st , 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds during his time here. Same as Walsh. Plus they trade for an all time great in Trent Willams. The problem hadsn't been lack of investing in the OL. The problem has been poor results. McGlinchey was a starter and still is with another team. Puni has been pretty good. Banks and Burford not so good.

Would you consider this a devlopment issue or a personel issue?

There is no evidence that he had diverticulitis. Where did you get that idea?

Could be a combination of both. Every team picks players they think will help them but over half never really have an impact.Banks looke like a solid pick but for whatver reason he never developed into a quality NFL player. Some guys just can't handle the advanced competition when they reach the highest levels.
