"Trent has some dynamic skills, and he's working hard to be a really good player on every down. This is a really compliant guy," Scarnecchia said. "You say, 'Hey Trent, we got to' and he'll do it. He wants to be better. You can't ask for more than that." "He definitely has the skills to play out there. There's no doubt," Scarnecchia said. "He's long, he's big, he's a powerful guy. 1. They simply didn't trust him to pay him. He has shown up every year since his rookie year significantly over weight. Once you pay him starting tackle money with large guarantees how are they supposed to make sure he does his job?
2. Supposedly he didn't watch any film. I heard this on knbr by maiocco on Monday. So take it with a grain of salt because I didn't find a link.
3. He wasn't a great fit in the run game, specifically reach blocking. He doesn't have the lateral quickness that is desirable for this.
While he can be an elite tackle, he didn't fit the scheme perfectly and you would be rewarding someone with poor work ethic in a young locker room, the optics are terrible on that. I wish him the best and do hope he becomes what he is capable of becoming, but it wasn't going to happen here. i think it was the right decision by Lynch and Shanny. The patriots vet locker room and staff have been able to get him on the right path, and plus the burn of the niners not paying him should light a fire under his ass. Niners shouldn't have to do that though, being a professional and getting paid should be motivation enough.
Also, Brown is a better tackle at the moment than McGlinchey. Though I think inevitably McGlinchey will be the better overall tackle, due to his combination of work ethic and ability. He will inevitably struggle this year due to the level of edge defenders he will be facing, its pretty much guaranteed. Be patient and give it time before you start calling him a bust. He's looked good this preseason for the most part, and while I was critical of this pick because of my own bias towards other players, I think its a wise investment.
