It has been a little quiet around here.

There are much better Ban Hammer targets around than susweel. This is the time of the year we all up our count list. Plenty of PBMs coming back around. No need to bother a 100k poster.

I do read, quit well too!! I know it'll cost to cut him, over $2mil. And I still say it's time to move on with an injury settlement. Cap-wise that will not hurt the team that much. Currently we are $3,288,157 over the cap (https://overthecap.com/calculator/san-francisco-49ers/) Cutting bait with him now will put us at $1,150,000 over the cap, with all rookies signed.

Does it save today? No. Does it save in 2020? Yup!!! It pushes us up to $4,925,177 over our 2020 cap. That also reduces our total 2020 liabilities from $203,288,157 to $195,074,823; by my math that's an $8,213,334? swing in our 2020 cap favor.

I'm sorry Bro, but I say we cut loose of him now.

Currently? you mean next yr...

as long as they cut him before 4/1/20 (when money becomes guaranteed) it's still the same result. They have to pay him regardless this yr, I see no advantage of cutting him now vs putting him on short-term IR? outside if you want to use that initial roster spot on someone. IMO I'm fine with him on the short-term IR then when that roster spot opens up they just scoop up someone that was cut.
Yes, next year.

"It's a real bummer because he keeps getting to the final step," Lynch said. "And the final step is actually playing NFL football, especially at his position, where you got to make hard cuts and you have to put your foot in the ground. And we did it a month ago and we got to that step and he kind of regressed, and I would say yesterday we had a similar situation.

"So we're trying to get, really, what's the root cause of the problems he's having. And just because he's working through this, we're working through it, I'll leave it at that. But yesterday was not encouraging from that standpoint with Jet. What that means, we're not sure, yet. And we're working hard to find that out."
- John Lynch

I'm sorry, but that don't sound good to me, don't sound like there's any confidence he'll be seeing the field anytime soon. Knowing that he keeps getting to the final step only to have a set-back is pretty discouraging. It seems to me that he will never fully recover from that knee injury. Reading that I highly doubt that he will be available this season at all.

I know we have to pay him regardless this season. But for me I see this as a wash. On the roster he's just useless dead weight (hate to pt it in those terms). Off the roster we can at least fill his roster spot. I'm ok with IR, just so long as it's season-ending IR. No need to have him wasting a roster spot and then we're unable to resign promising talent because they got picked up. (Remember, we're gonna be cutting A LOT of caliber talent this season.) So I say cut, injury settlement, or at least season-ending IR (before final cuts).

IMHO

He isn't gonna agree to an injury settlement, he has a $2.6M injury GTD in 2020, he won't just let that go.
Good point. Then we cut him and pay him to cut our losses NOW!! Cutting him next year will cost even more to cut him ($6,500,000 in GTM). Lets take our medicine now and get it over with.

We gain nothing by cutting McKinnon right now. IR him with the return designation and see how he looks in 9 weeks. If he still can't go - release him with an injury settlement.

Good.

IR with designation clears a roster spot where we want to keep an extra player. If one of the other backs goes down, we bring back McKinnon. If they are all healthy and performing, he sits the year or gets a settlement. Either way, there is no reason to cut him. It would gain nothing.

Who was a better option than Malcom Smith in 2017 with our expansion roster?

Usually GMs and HC with tons of experience that are available in early March are fired guys that no one wants.

Well, anyone that played more than 12 games in two seasons would've at least been a better investment.

I feel sorry for McKinnon - you know he's dyeing to see the field.
I would have loved to see what he could do in Kyle's O, but think he's done here now.
Might return wk 8 I guess, but I like the RBs we have now.

His contract escalates heavily next year, to an $8.8m cap hit, and it was unlikely he'd see that part of the deal even if he'd been healthy for 2 years.
What are AB's thoughts on that?

Yeah, he won't sniff that salary in '20. He'll be long gone by then.
