This escalation is getting way out of hand. Every guy that signs a new contract has to be paid more than the current largest contract. QBs have gone from $20-$25 million to now over $50 million in just 2 years. Herbert's a good young QB but $50 million per year? That puts him in a category of the top 500 wage earners in the country. Not just athletes. All wage earners.

As long as NFL earnings / profits keep going up , so will salarys since there is an algorithm/ function to how much salary caps go up .

So will cable and streaming costs along with ticket prices, food and parking. Don't be surprised if your local provider drops NFL Network if they raise their price.

I'm not losing any sleep if any of this comes true
We now have 5 QBs (soon to be 6) that will be earning $50 million per year. We definitely have our riorities wrong.

I'm a lifelong sports fan and a true 49er die hard but money is going to ruin sports. It's already pricing many people out of the market. We have college kids making millions of dollars. Pro athletes among the top 500 earners in the country. At least 5% of those are athletes when you throw in the other sports. I know some have short careers but where does it say they can't earn money when their career ends. Some actually earn more after they retire because of their name.

Money ruined sports long ago.

People are willing to pay. So where should the money go? More to the owners?

What's sad is that I can't even take my family to 1 regular season baseball, basketball, or football game for less than $500. Ridiculous.

Exactly what I'm saying. I'm not saying that players shouldn't earn a good living but $50 million per year? Hardly anyone will ever even get close to earning that much in their entire career. If your fortunate enough to have a great jb and earn $500K per year it would take 40 years to earn $20 million. That's still less than half of wwhat these guys are getting now.

I have no room for guys that say they need a day off and skip games that some fan paid $500 to see. I have no sympathy for guys that don't play when they have minor injuries. This salary escalation is showing no signs of slowing down. It seems like every contract has to be bigger than the current highest one no matter how good the player is. This is going to lead to a strike eventually if they don't get it under control. Teams can't keep raising prices to cover these soaring salaries.

Another issue is the salary cap. A $50 million dollar salary is over 20% of the entire team. That's for one player. Now we have DEs and other players saying they want their share of the pie too so they'll need to keep raising the cap. That means higher ticket prices. $600. $700. When will it stop. These guys have to realize that the people that pay o see them play in person or on TV aren't seeing big raises in their income.

Athletes were never meant to be among the top .00001% of all earners. All because they're fortunate enough to be big enough or fast enough to play a game at a high level that many of us played when we were kids.

You should probably be ready to not watch any sports bc these numbers will grow for all the major leagues .

it is possible to follow a team and not spend a single dollar as well .
My thing about resting or not playing with minor injuries is this. That problem is almost exclusive to the NBA. You dont see players in football sitting out for load management. In MLB, players get days off, but they are typically scheduled (or you can easily figure them out i.e. a catcher having a day off on a day game after a night game). But I agree with you.

Interesting post, 5GR. I think an issue, is RBs. Pacheco, for KC, he ran as hard as any runner in 2022. Now he may start on the PUP. We haven't played since Feb, and he may miss the start of the season. Basically draft em in the 7th, run em into the ground, then get another once they get to 2nd contract. It's an issue of sorts.

On a guy so vital, like a CMC, load management is a responsibility, of the head coach. The goal is you want that guy available for all 17 games and 3-4 more, on top.

I'm not 5GR, but yeah.

In terms of CMC, I think you are right that load management is important....however its not the kind of load management that we were talking about with missing games and what not. I think limiting his touches and the hits he takes is the kind of load management we will use with him. Hopefully he sits week 18, and thats it. I cant see us sitting him random games simply to save him for the playoffs.

I already am. I'm not going to pay YouTube just to see the Niners. I'll have to be content to watch the Sunday and Monday night games and hopefully catch the replays on NFL Network. Little by little they're chipping away at the ability of the average fan to see their team without having to pony up more money. Those billionaires will squeeze those nickels until the buffalo s**ts.

You can always stream games for free.
just watched "Quarterback", the netflix series that features Pat Mahomes...

Mahomes is a Shortstop playing QB Lol, most unorthodox throwing motion in the pro game today but he makes the plays so he can do what he wants
