No it wouldn't, it would be a lateral move.

What about with the Assistant HC sweetener that Norton got?

Taking fandom out of it, it's a better opportunity for him and he gets to learn the role from his former DC Carroll.

That's what I meant as the promotion. Give him the same job as they were going to give Norton.

Jeff Ulbrich would be a solid hire.

The title is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Its largely an honorary title. Atlanta could stop him from leaving for all positions other than HC.

An assistant is still an assistant whether you call them a LB coach, a defensive coordinator, Assistant HC or Grand Wizard of Football Awesomeness.

Norton coached the Seahawks' linebackers from 2010-2014 and is a "comfortable" hire in Seattle, reuniting with Pete Carroll. Norton signed a deal to work as the 49ers' assistant head coach/linebackers, but he can break that contract to rejoin the Seahawks in a higher-up position. Norton coordinated abominable defenses in Oakland the past two years. After his firing this past season, the Raiders' defense played much better down the stretch under John Pagano.

I agree. I don't know too much about Ken as a DC. As a LB coach, he was fantastic. But perhaps under Pete, he'll learn the DC gig.

It is interesting that Ken had an out clause that should he be wanted as DC by someone else, he could get out of Kyle's contract. I think Cheat and Ken talked about this soon after he was fired from the Raiders that Cheat was eyeing him for a DC job. Just like our RB coach Robert Turner had an agreement to be Kyle's RB coach should Kyle get a HC gig.

It will be interesting if ShanaLynch will still try to upgrade the defensive coaches, and for that matter, the offensive coaching squad.

Sucks for position coaches, but it is what it is.

If we had the previous two coaching staff, I'd be concerned. But with Shanny and Lynch, not worried, trust they'll find someone else just as good.

I agree. Also the Ken hire was kind of a weird situation. It was a demotion for Ken, from DC to basically back to a lower level position coach. I think Ken kinda felt it when Saleh, who was just a quality control coach when he was with Seadderall, became basically his supervisor - and he was the one that *taught* Saleh about all things defense. I'm wondering if Ken didn't like the fact that a junior coach (in his eyes) was now telling him what to do. Or maybe it was just the fact that the Seadderall DC position was more of a lateral move than a demotion with the 49er coaching offer. Anyway, we'll see next year how good a DC his is, when he's faced with Kyle's multi-dimensional passing game powered by a Brady 2.0 QB.

Two examples... both of which are a reach.

to someone who helped us get a SuperBowl.

Again like I said before some of yall posters....lol

The #49ers could have blocked Norton's move back to Seattle. HC jobs are the only coaching opportunities that can't be blocked. I'm thinking that, with an improved O line and better weapons, Shanahan and Garoppolo will make Norton wish he stayed put. #49wz

Previously reported that he had an "out clause" in his contract, so not sure if this is true.

Or after meeting with him and understanding his understanding of a championship defense, we're glad he will have an opportunity to go learn over there.

i can't blame him. Would you rather work for paul allen or jed york? Seattle or Santa Clara? The 12th man vs the 12 fans at Levi's? Pete Carroll or Kyle Shanny? To be THE man on defense vs being saleh's little b***h on defense? It's a no brainer.

Annnnnnnnd blocked.
