I bet they offered this same position to Rathman last year and he turned it down

Doubtful.

I love Rathman though. Kyle just had his own guy for RB coach, and Rathman was kind of a hold over that really just needed to exit so the team could start 100% fresh.

Nope. Kyle had a meeting with Rathman trying to figure out a way to keep him on the staff.

Didnt know that, or forgot. Miss Rathman for sure.

Very nice! This to me proves that Ken was a Saleh hire, and not somebody to replace Saleh.

If our defense keeps improving then he will be Saleh's replacement
Im not saying saleh is going anywhere anytime soon but yall are crazy if you dont think teams dont hedge their bets or have backup plan A B C and so on. Maybe saleh gets hot and lands a gig in 3 years or falls flat on his face. Successful organizations plan ahead not once its too late

Ken Norton is Saleh's guy. I bet he called him up the second he was fired in Oakland and promised he'd go to bat for him with the 49ers. Yorks ponied up...

So far this team is pretty ego-less. Everyone just wants to win.

I like this a lot....

The '94 blueprint was what the team kept trying to replicate under Carmen Policy/Dwight Clark/Vinny Cerrato...heck it almost worked again in '97

Things that kept it from happening:

- GB always stood in the way and they knew our offense

- The defense after '97 got old quick

- Running game until Hearst became established was subpar

- Coaching change in '97 IMO messed with continuity, Mooch should've just been hired as OC, but Seifert lost the power struggle with Eddie D and Carmen Policy

Basically 95-96 defense was top knotch, but offense was subpar...97-98 offense (especially running game) got back on track, but the defense got old and slow real quick...the magic formula of '94 was never recaptured and the two sides of the ball were never in sync at the same time in terms of being unstoppable for a season

By the time '99 rolled around and BW/Donahue took over, it was a task of trying to patch the team up with offloading bad contracts, swallowing dead cap $$ and stockpiling picks...Steve going down precipitated the rapid demise of that season

That's being generous...

Yeah, thats what Kyle is looking to do. Hire someone who was absolutely terrible as a DC to put pressure on his current DC to be paranoid about his job.

You are probably right. If next year or the year after, some bottom feeding team needs a HC, and the 49ers have made it deep into the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl, why not get Saleh as HC? I'm still amazed that Dan Quinn is a HC after the atrocious D Lines he coached here under (I think) Mariucci and Jim Mora Jr.

Why would Norton have been hired to replace Saleh anyways? Norton was an abysmal DC.
Oh crap. Every article says Ken is hired as assistant head coach. I hope Kyle's job is safe? Praying Jed didn't change his mind on KS.

IIRC they wanted to keep rathman but not as the RB coach. He said no.

I remember the articles where they said they wanted to keep him on in some capacity, but not as RB coach.

I just figured it was lip service to a departing 49ers vet. It was clear Rathman was not a fit for what this regime wanted to do offensively, and im sure Rathman realized that.

I didnt think an offer was ever extended. Just the incoming regime was trying to be respectful to a long time 49er player and coach.
Good Pete Carroll connection.
