Why? He's our best best option after treys injury. He isn't our starter. He's saved our season. The teammates love him. Some still call us contenders with him.

Why do some of you keep saying that if someone questions Jimmy or thinks we could do better that we HATE him. I don't think many hate him but there are a lot of us that want someone better. Someone more dynamic that can actually bail the team out when it becomes necessary. Jimmy is fine as long as everything is going smoothly. Some of us just don't have a lot of faith in him if he has to bring the team from 2 or more scores down late in the game. Thankfully the defense is usually good enough that it isn't an issue and the games are usually close.

Also where are we without jimmy. Probably looking at a top 5 pick next year that we have to give to Miami, its possible the McCaffrey deal doesn't get done given how s**tty our recird is... the fan base is forgetting where this season could have gone because of that damn injury if we didn't have Jimmy. Lucky lucky.

Yes I can. We've probably had a lot worse than him in the past. Saying where are we without Jimmy doesn't mean we can't want someone even better. I know I got spoiled when Montana and then Young were at the helm but it made me see first hand what a great, not just a good QB can do. That's why I want more. Jimmy will have to do until we find that guy. Is it Lance? I have no idea and I don't think anyone else can realistically say they know for sure.
Don't ever let go of those standards. Ever. Our history is littered with some of the very best OL/DL in history too. I still hold them to that standard today. The skill positions too? That goes without saying.
Having those standards is fine. But expecting every position group to be filled with pro bowl level players like its still the pre salary cap era is just inviting disappointment.
Yeah, I never understood the "probowl player" at every position mantra (not speaking about you). We've probably come close along the two trenches in our history, esp. the DL, but that should never be the realistic goal. It's about highest end unit play. We all remember the Dream Team in Philly. L.A. Dodgers. N.Y. Yankees.
Wouldn't "the very best OL/DL, skill positions too" qualify as pro bowl or better players? You are talking about position groups and not individual players, correct? Perhaps I misread your post.
I was talking collectively over our history. Not all at once (usually a nice mix of those accolades on the top teams). But when you look at our history, we've had some dominant OL/DL position groups. Just keep that standard or at least keep striving for it even if it's harder to keep those dudes in this cap era.
Bill Walsh usually had a nice mix of HOF/PB + youth + HOF/PB + youth, etc.
We do have that right now on the left side. If we add a high end C, look out.
We have a lot to appreciate right now as a fan base. We have one of the best play caller/ scheme guys in the league. We have a GM who understands value and team needs. We have high caliber WR's, TE, RB, T, G, ER, LB, S, CB. Plus we have youth at many of the position groups just mentioned. There are probably 28 other fan bases that would love to have what we have right now. Expecting more high caliber players than what we already have besides maybe a higher caliber QB would be kind of impossible to accomplish as an organization. All we are missing at this point is a championship to show for it.
Totally fair to me. We're playing with our backup QB and are still considered a top team. That speaks volumes on every level.
I'm always in team building mode looking for the final piece to help put us over the top or for next year, help Trey out. So don't mind me when I go down that road.
I got you. But imo, there is no final piece because the roster will be forever changing/evolving. We might become slightly weaker at one position group next year but stronger at another for example. I just don't think there is too much ceiling left for a roster like ours due to the salary cap. However, I do believe we need to maintain our current talent level in order to keep our SB window open.
It's true...not much room for adding more high end talent like you listed. They just need to stay healthy together and keep developing the youth. There will always be holes and weaknesses in rosters and these seasons are certainly marathons. No doubt. I'm still confident we can get there with ShanaLynch.
Shanahan does need to get that monkey off his back.
