Bad teams generally have lots of salary cap space. Competitive teams generally don't have a whole lot of salary cap space. This was a bad team that lost a lot of players to retirement and also whiffed on a lot of draft picks, hence you're not signing guys to big extensions. As this team continues to improve, the salary cap space will shrink until it gets to the point where you are having to let productive players walk because you simply can't afford to pay everybody. In the meantime I'm going to enjoying avoiding that scenario awhile longer. They should definitely add some pieces via FA but still be wise enough to maintain longterm flexibility for when they are team competing for the playoffs and a SB.

Where are you getting 11% every yr? From my understanding it is based on a 3 yr cycle...they could spend 40% this yr 40% yr two then 19% yr three. It carries over.

That's around $19 million (going off the cap this yr)

I didn't say anything about every year. You mentioned that they have to spend only 89% of the cap, I put a dollar figure to the difference between spending 89% of the cap over three years and spending 100% of the cap over three years.

Holy s**t...
Youre not lying
This may have been talked about. If so please forgive me. But can somebody make me understand the logic of Kevin Lynch?:

You get what you pay for.

I agree about the flexibility but I think the 49ers got way too conservative with the spending as holes were dug and left unfilled.

We should see a big change in spending this year, I don't see Paraag and Jed tying Shanalynch's hands.

How did you get $60 million then? It would be more around $19-20 million.

He's worried he might go into the tank if he starts losing games.

I think it was more Baalke, he's even stated he didn't like to spend money in FA....it was all about building through the draft, issue was he couldn't draft lol.

I think it worked out pretty well for them. They were in a position where they had to overpay significantly for free agents. People were mad about the deals they gave to Malcolm Smith, Juice and others but that is realistically what happens when you're a terrible team. Now suddenly they are an up and coming team with a franchise QB that guys will want to come and play with.

They have $120+ million with the carryover, they'll be able to sign some premier free agents at market rates rather than paying the "awful team" surcharge. I think you could very well see some guys offering a discount to come here. Its a much better free agent class and a much better environment. So whether you attribute that to luck or whatever, they are in a far better position with better overall leverage, they aren't going to be working from a position of desperation.

I cant stand Kevin Lynch. Seems like a good guy but his analysis has been way off for some time.

Just the other day he was spouting off that the majority of Jimmys big plays were all improvised which is bs

Sounds like Cian Fahey. "Garoppolo is basically Ryan Fitzpatrick, he just gets away with a lot of passes and somehow they leave his hand and wind up in the receivers hands but its just luck."

The total for the the cap between 2013 and 2016 was $555 million, 89% of $555 million = $494 million.
