I assure you that wasn't 'mostly' the case, as I was actually involved in those conversations and you're guessing.

I don't think it's a very strong point to keep harping on the fact that he wouldn't have been here as a 27 million dollar backup. It's only meaningful to people who thought a restructure was impossible or highly unlikely (because Jimmy was mad or whatever else, lol). Clearly it wasn't given the timing and lacking market for his services.

I don't see why people wouldn't have expected him to get a reworked deal as part of a trade in the first place.
i'm here all the time.. i would have noticed.

no one expected it, because jimmy wasn't in the cards for the 49ers until the very end
Non problem to me. They're waiting for a team to come and get him that's not seattle.

Well to be fair, one of the circumstances I thought would need to be present wasn't going to be revealed to near 'the very end'.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you don't have knowledge of every conversation that's happening on this board because you're here all the time, lol.

I think it's good advice to just speak for yourself and not groups of people when possible.

Lol c'mon dude. They left the door open the entire time as Ribs continually said Ribs was right, you as usual was flat out wrong.

It's kinda hard to hold TreyDey/Ribs accountable for for all of his swings and misses given all the names he's allowed to have.
What part of

"but we were always clear to Jimmytha him salary cap-wise in a backup role and supporting Trey in that and if that worked for him, that was a no brainer for us. "

Explain what that means what does "we were ALWAYS clear" mean?

Not to get involved in this branch of the argument, but... Shanahan on why Jimmy wasn't at practice and at meetings:

"I think that was because the chances were, to me it seemed, slim to none, just with the possibility of that happening." <-referring to Jimmy being on the 49ers in 2022.

He said to Jimmy they'd love to have him as a backup if nothing happened with respect to trades, but he really truly believed he would not be a 49er. So even Shanahan thought it wouldn't happen, which is why he wasn't in meetings (he also mentioned the 24 million guaranteed if he got hurt).

NO ONE—not even Shanahan—realistically thought he'd be back except the people who thought he'd be the 49ers starter. Which he isn't.

.
.
.

Now, regarding what Trey/Ribs said, it was that he'd sign a small deal TO START, in hopes of by STARTING and showing out he'd get another back. Unless I'm mistaken, Ribs/Trey did not think he'd be signing to be the backup. Which is what he did. Am I wrong on that?

If you read the entire thing he simply didn't think he'd be back because he thought Jimmy would end up somewhere else but then he says he was "always" welcomed back as a backup. As Ribs said the entire offseason, that though unlikely the door was open. That was always his point... Period. People misconstrued a very simple concept. York said it, Lynch said it, Shanny said it. The possibility was always there.

Yes you are wrong. I was just actually just going back to make sure it wasn't me that was wrong on what he said. I remember reading this and wanting to respond at work but I can't do this at work, just lurk.

Now seriously WTF are you talking about?

It's extremely basic what he was saying. Random just needed to argue like he's doing now.

While that's true, even Shanahan didn't believe that was possible, and it was NEVER possible at his salary. Shanahan said point blank it was not an option.

The "simple concept" being missed is it WAS NOT AN OPTION (to directly quote Shanahan) at the salary he had on his previous contract. The thing that no one believed—and I dare say even most of YOUR side didn't believe—is that Jimmy would ever agree to a massive pay cut with the expressly stated stipulation of being the backup QB for the 49ERS. Given that they drafted his replacement.

We all knew Jimmy was a good guy, but that's another level of humility that I don't think anyone here really believed he had. He doesn't need money.

A whole lot of perfect storms had to happen for this to occur, the most important of which was the timing of his surgery, which ruined the opportunity for him to join another team early enough for camp. But even with that, I can't fathom anyone, except maybe two or three people, who would imagine that Jimmy wouldn't be too angry and hurt to agree to be the backup QB with a dramatically reduced salary on the 49ers.

Ribs entire point, the entire time was that they were leaving the door open for this no matter how unlikely it was. I'm sorry, you guys are completely muddying the waters and switching the argument as contract had nothing to do with the rare chance Jimmy would return. A lot had to happen for this to happen and that why it was so unlikely but always, from back in February, ALWAYS, a possibility. They specifically said this and it was pointed out hundreds of times.

It's pretty ridiculous that suddenly it's about the contract when it was always about leaving the door open for his return. Guys should own that they were wrong, instead they have completely changed the actual discussion. The discussion was that they were not lying when they said a return was possible, Shanny admitted it was "always" possible. Fans here said they were lying and it was coach speak. That has nothing to do with contracts. Ribs was correct the entire time.

He restructured his current deal so as to not get cut.

He was not content with getting cut (for reasons already repeated), which is what you claimed and was corrected on. Take the "L" my man. It's okay.

Getting cut a week before the season is a bit different than becoming a free agent at the end of a season. This is obvious to anyone without a weird agenda.

Lol you are lost at sea here. That was central to my point to Ribs/Trey from the very beginning.

Taking a 1-year prove it deal in September after 53 man cuts would NOT be beneficial to Jimmy on a new team with an average roster.

If he could get a solid 3 year deal or something like that then sure. But that clearly was not in the cards.

Dude said he'd be perfectly content with getting cut now and as we saw,....he was horribly wrong. It's okay.

I'm not lost at all. Jimmy has a very favorable contract now. If he does nothing, he gets paid nicely for a backup. If he plays, he gets paid nicely for a starter. He can't be traded unless he wants the trade. He can't be franchised. He's guaranteed to go into next season as a free agent, at the start of free agency. He has quite a bit of leverage now.

The Niners, Shanahan in particular, are doing a little damage control and acting like they got this "great deal" because they look like idiots. They overplayed their hand and waited too long to trade Jimmy, and risked him going to a division rival. And very possibly they're not as confident as they once were in Trey "learning on the run" so now they have a quality backup.

Anyone pretending that Jimmy is making out badly with this deal simply doesn't understand the business side of the NFL. He is a MUCH more attractive option for other teams now, both this season and next season.
Jimmy couldn't find a trade partner. His agent had full access to seek any offer since march. So there is no waiting too long, no damage control and def not overplayed. They weren't going to pay jimmy his full salary and that was it. jimmy caved in and took the pay cut

as for business.. it might be bad as he might not play the entire year or not play a meaningful snap in Jan 22

You realize that Lynch and Shanahan run the team and make the call on who Jimmy gets traded to, right? We have no idea what they were offered, what Jimmy found, etc. And obviously Jimmy's previous deal with one year left, and the fact that the Niners had obviously committed to Trey, made teams think they could just wait for Jimmy to be cut. Now that's not the case. Jimmy holds almost all of the cards to his future; that wasn't true in March or even 2 days ago. You and the other hater continually trying to make this look like a bad deal for Jimmy is laughable and exposing you for the biases that you have.

"We felt strongly giving the keys to Trey. I can't wait to get him started on our team Week 1. Having Jimmy as a backup makes us feel really good because we have a starting quarterback as a backup."

49att says that Jimmy isn't a starter though. I wonder who's right, Shanny or 49att?

There's still plenty of consternation on this board regarding retaining Jimmy and that decision's effect on our locker room and specifically Trey Lance. Contract was one aspect of the conversation and not necessarily the obstacle it's being made out to be now.

That said you'd be here 24/7 chasing down bad takes. Nobody is immune.

What? This got worked out months ago. it was the plan. It was always the plan. Jimmy would help trey along, help the team purchase on ol or two (which will keep him + trey healthy) make another deep play off run, then land a $35M deal somewhere far away from this histrionic, unstable front office. Remember QB's play til they're 50 now. Jimmy Startable got plenty of time ....

With all due respect, you guys are. The argument was that Jimmy was not coming back period. Ribs stance was that they have left the door open because there was always a small chance if things like contract and availability were there.

Remember how he continually posted direct quotes? Like every day? Then guys said they were lying and it was nothing more than coach speak? No... They were not lying like guys like random claimed every day. That has nothing, I repeat NOTHING to do with contract. They(the FO) were being honest that retaining Jimmy was always an option on the table if all the unlikely "dominos" fell right.
