Is Jimmy in yet?
it seems to me like the best option for the 49ers is to Jimmy G. for a couple of games to see how he is as a player and if those look good then franchise tag him and then if he plays well next year give him a long-term contract or franchise tag him again.

but giving a long-term contract after he hasn't shown anything (two games doesn't count as showing anything) and nothing in a non-patriots environment would be foolish, no matter who he is.

The Redskins said the same thing about Cousins several years back. The argument with signing him to a long term deal now is that you can sign him cheaper now than he'll be if he plays well next year assuming we put some pieces around him. The better he plays, the more expensive he'll be.

We also know he'd suck right now behind our horrible offensive line with no receivers. Playing him now would expose him to a potential injury. See how he looks in practice and go into the offseason knowing what he's worth (while other teams are in the dark in case we decide to trade him).
What is this nonsense I'm reading how the Niners aren't guaranteed to sign Garoppolo to a long term deal? They might tag him and trade him??? What the hell is that? It better not be true because who would they trade him for? Kirk is going to be a free agent. Are they going to sign Kirk outright and trade Jimmy G for a WR? I'm angry and confused by that report.

One hit away. How dope would that be...

To see Garoppolo get his face kicked in too and start hearing footsteps before this team is ever able to build an OL? Not so much.

The Cards love to blitz and this patchwork OL is going to have their hands full all game.

Agreed. I don't want to see Jimmy G until after the bye week.

I get the value of the position but at some point results are what get you paid.

If I'm jimmy G I'm asking for a shorter deal if I'm not gonna get as much guaranteed money as I want. He's got a chance to get multiple contract through tour his career BUT dude needs to realize that SF needs to pay for other players that will make him better thus getting paid more.

Someone would definitely give him $20+ mil a year. Cleveland certainly would. Arizona and Jacksonville might. I think the Jets definitely would.

not if we play him and he ain't good,

At this point nobody wants to sniff Cleveland. As for Jacksonville I can see them going with Alex Smith, which would be the wise choice. The Jets I can see signing Kirk.

There's no tag and trade scenario because that would leave us without a qb. If for whatever reason we didn't like him Shanny would just move back to Cousins. It still makes to ink him before you let him play though to make sure he's the long term guy.

That is what I'm hoping for, which is why you MUST play Jimmy G this season. You can't just have him ride the pine and not know what you're getting next season especially when Cousin's is hitting the market this offseason.

If we don't play him we have a legit chance of going winless. I'd play him for that reason alone past the bye.

He'll play next week. Kyle isn't a patient guy. And sanalynch are worried about going winless

I totally agree.

With the current level of quarterbacking in the league being so high with the emergence of young QBs, it makes sense to make sure Jimmy G is up to task to handle the competition before we commit long term.

Just within NFC West alone, we already have to be able to handle Russell Wilson and now Jared Goff (who is playing better and better under McVay, the dude scored 4 TDs today with 0 INT). If Jimmy G is not equipped to outscore these 2 guys (once we get him some weapons and an O-line), we will never be able to make it out of the division let alone winning the Super Bowl.

Sounds like a negotiating tactic by SF. Dont give him all the leverage.

I obviously wouldn't want to pay this guy 20+ a year for starting 2 games. I'm down with the franchise tag and seeing how he does with a full season under his belt. That seems like the most logical choice, but you can't tell me you're going to tag and trade the guy. That's just idiotic.

Not necessarily. For the sake of discussion, you could in theory tag him and still go for a top QB in this coming draft and let things play out in camp. That way, you wouldn't have to wait another season to draft a QB just in case Garoppolo doesn't pan out.
