Right now it is all 100% speculation. All I know for certain is that the 49ers gave up a 2nd round pick for a QB that Kyle has liked for a long time and that Jimmy is a terrific fit for a WCO. Those factors can allow one to reasonably conclude that there is a better than average chance of Garoppolo receiving a long term deal with the 49ers.

Agreed, makes zero sense imo to give up basically a 1st rd pick and like you said someone they liked enough to reach out to NE this past offseason to acquire, only to let him walk in FA lol.

Media needs stories as usual.

Oh c'mon, you know damn well Belichick bullied Lynch into giving up a second round pick. It's pretty obvious Niners never wanted Jimmy G and will forgo any franchise tags and just release him. The second round pick, you ask.....well that's just costs of doing business with Belichick. At this point, I think lynch and company are just happy he has come calling and demanding the first round pick......for now My league sources say a Hoyer for the first round pick could happen.. This is because Hoyer is Kyle's true HAND PICKED QB.

They are in good position regardless of the outcome. You start Jimmy G for the last 6 games. See where he's at. If he falls on his face you cut bait and have a high draft pick or plenty of cap space to go get Cousins. If he plays decent, you tag him and make him show you he can do it for a whole year. If he does you sign him. If he doesn't you gather draft picks and look to FA and the draft. I think it would be a mistake to throw all our eggs in one basket. Take your time admit when your wrong and build the team right. If we want a franchise qb were going to have to pay. Use that damn cap space for once.

No.

There is no way to "see where he's at" this year, as there is no way he becomes comfortable in this complex offense that soon. Seeing where he's at will be seeing how quickly he is learning it, and you can even do that in practice. Jimmy Garoppolo is not going to feel comfortable being tested this soon when he will clearly not feel he can run this offense like he will be able to later, and with this team? Geez. To do so will show him you are not fair.

The decision to sign him was made when we made the trade. Just do it. He has a high floor, and he has Shanahan. We need to give everybody the feeling this is a partnership, we're in it together, and we're going to work to make it successful. It's a team, and he's on the team.

People here want to screw this up. I hope and think Kyle and John have other ideas.

Working with him for eight weeks will give them a chance to evaluate enough to determine the need to use a high draft pick on the QB position. I would still like to see them have three QBs on the roster and if two are on rookie contracts it wouldn't hurt the team budget.

I don't think it's Lynch and Shanahan's philosophy to have three quarterbacks on the roster. Expect to see that third guy be practice squad eligible and on the practice squad, which means he won't be a high draft pick that would be taken by someone else.

"Working" with him for eight weeks will give them a chance to evaluate him. Playing in games, though it will happen, may not even be necessary. It's progress and ability they'll be looking for.

24/7 news cycle needs stories and if there isn't actual news to report then some needs to be manufactured.

As soon as I start seeing words such as "could", "might", "possibly" then I know it could very possibly, just might be utter BS.

With this team don't be surprised if this happened.

Yeah definitely sounds like a leverage move. I guess my point was they have options. They can do whatever they want. I just think it's best to get an idea of what you have in Jimmy before you commit a 100 million or whatever Qbs are getting paid these days.

Yeah its not like they have a completely different front office and coaching staff. Lets keep imposing the sins of GMs and coaches past rather than judging these guys on their own merits over time.

I was saying this five seconds after the trade. Yee and Paraag sitting next to each other at the presser. No way he takes a snap without security (agent perspective).
