The one non injury knock on Jimmy's game is his deep ball. Credit to Kyle, in this game, there were many plays were multiple receivers were open and every time, Jimmy chose the shorter pass. I wonder if that is because he didn't see the deep route open, if he trusts his intermediate throws more than his deep ball, he feels there is no need to vertically stretch the field the way our defense is playing, or a combination of the 3. I wonder if this is something Kyle wants him to improve on or if he is satisfied with the high percentage 15 yard chunk plays instead of the low percentage possible homeruns.
I think it's a little in between. Kyle probably wants him to take a few shots a game but mostly take the underneath stuff and intermediate plays that often result in chunk gains. There's something to be said about slow methodical ball control style offenses that wears out a defense. Sure u can go for the home run, but the 15 yard plays still get u there and u have worn those guys down. Not saying if there's someone 20 yards beyond the D he shouldn't take it tho (See Goodwin vs Bengals), but I like what Jimmy is doing and I bet Kyle does too minus the INT's.
I don't think Jimmy G. has a good deep ball. I've seen QBs that can wing it, and Jimmy G. can't hold a candle to them.
Don't get me wrong; I'm a huge Jimmy G. fan. Joe didn't have a good deep ball at first, either. It took years and working with his receivers, and then getting Jerry Rice, who gave him lots of opportunities. (In the Jan. '82 NFCCG against the Cowboys, two of Joe's three
INTs on the day were underthrown long balls, when Walsh was trying to take advantage of the Cowboys defense on the field for those plays.) It didn't stop Joe from dominating with precise medium and short passes in the early years of The Dynasty.
