I thought the knee looked good on that 20 yard scramble - he was scooting pretty good.

Good post. Agreed - Garoppolo has only started 11 games in his career...11! Not even one full season's worth and he's 9-2 over those 11. The guy's got obvious NFL/QB1 talent, is a leader, comes from roots tied to two of the best to ever be in the NFL (Belichick & Brady), and is just a winner.

Yesterday, he didn't play his best game by any means but he did make some key plays (TD pass, key 1st Down passes to keep drives going/clock running, showed he can still run for a 1st when needed - yes, I know there was a penalty). After almost a year off from football and still getting in sync with his WRs, you know there's going to be some rust. What I'm happy about is how he responded after the pick 6. He'll only get better and better and better. Really glad he's back as our team's QB!

Exactly. There's only so much that people can show you in a classroom. If you're not doing it, you're not going to have the experience or instincts from that experience to go out and play perfect football when the bullets start flying.

Think of any job you've had to learn. Usually you start of with verbal training, then maybe some hands on practice. When you're out there doing it on your own, you always come back later with questions of.. "Okay, so I haven't seen this before - what do we do here?" OR "This was maybe something I saw or did in practice, but just drew a blank when it came up here" OR "I did this in practice, I know it in my head, I just messed it up in execution."

All three of the above can apply to Jimmy. Shanahan has repeatedly stressed the fact that verbal and classroom training, as well as practice, can only go so far. Again and again, Shanny says the only way Jimmy will become the player we envision he will be, is by continuing to gain real game experience. 11 Career games isn't enough. And 9 regular season games in this system isn't enough either.

Jimmy G struggled some, but when the dude gets down he just keeps battling and trying to work through it, and so far he does... me not worried, by game 4 he be ballin again like we expect... that was a pretty good Bucs D

knee may look good when running, but you throw from your waist with your feet planted. Until he can get those subtle adjustments down again, he's going to be somewhat off. Mechanically, these readjustments take time and tend to impact precision. Like I said earlier, it took Watson four games to get things where he needed them... and he's already had the experience of having to go through that type of injury before. JG is in uncharted territory, he's going to figure it out, but temper expectations.

By game five, if he's still doing the things that seem a bit off... start worrying.

I took a look at that pick6 again. I think Coleman should do a better job selling that route. He never really threaten Hargraves deep. Shuffle shuffle turn -- meh. Ideally you want him keep working back to the ball. Not sure he did that either.

This. Anyone who thought he was just going to come out firing on all cylinders after a year off from playing was being ridiculously unrealistic. If he's still struggling this much after four or five games, then you can really start wondering what the heck is going on.


As you mentioned, Watson struggled early on last year after returning from a torn ACL, to the point where people were wondering if he was damaged goods but after 5 weeks he was back to looking largely like himself again.

That one where Jimmy threw it to Bourne into double coverage, Kittle was open down the middle. Even raised his hand. Kyle was hot with Jimmy on the sideline after. Wonder if it was about that...

Im gonna be patient with Jimmy tho, much more patient than kyle who is yelling at him on national tv.

Two things:

1) Let a full season ride out before making final judgments on JG. Even if yesterday was 400 yards and 4 TDs....(this is a very specific stat from the 2013 season opener with Kap at home vs Green Bay)

2) If Mullens played that game yesterday with identical stats and plays, there'd be huge praise for him. Maybe to an extent it's warranted since he's an UFA backup, but the way people on here talk, it's as if he's as good or better than Jimmy. Never have I seen backups get this much love, not even Kap got this kinda love!!

To me, Jimmy's game yesterday was as good as what Mullens did to beat Seattle. Not once in that game did Mullens "win it" the way some guys on here are pining for, like it was Montana throwing 4 TDs to beat the Eagles in '89. He game managed it, made decent throws here and there, and 49er D/ST did a big part winning it (just like yesterday).

Shanahan offenses (at least in SF) are slow AF out the gate. Explain to me how Beathard looked relatively decent against the Chargers defense on the road last year...or Mullens late in the year looks good.

How does Jimmy look like in December? Well we've seen it, and it's $30M a year worthy....

If it's not too much work for THL or JonnyDel or whomever it is that does the stat splits...…...I'd love Sep/Oct vs Nov/Dec splits for 2017 and 2018 for all Niner QBs collectively (feel free to break down between actual QBs, but I think the point will be made without having to do so).

Agree. The last part where he got hit in the back made me cringe, but he got right back up, thank god.

I'll chalk it up to being rusty. If he has to "manage the game" our defense looks pretty awesome right now and that's fine. Only worried about two things:
1) please make it through the whole season
2) if we get into a spot where the game is on the line and it all falls on his shoulders, that he can get us there like he did circa 2017

You must have forgotten how the fans wanted Young over Montana. There were quite a few that thought Montana should have been trade long before he was. And that was way before we had forums like this or any social media.

I think fans are grappling with how to evaluate Jimmy. We know he is coming off of a major injury, but he was also anointed the franchise QB and took a fat contract. We can be patient, but also be honest. He looked awful yesterday. And it was apparent that Kyle didn't have confidence in him, hence the extremely conservative game plan. The CBs were sitting on routes, which led to the pick six. He wasn't "solid." The defense won that game, they scored 14 points. and created four TOs.

We all assume/hope he'll get much better as the season progresses. But we should be able to have honest assessments on how our franchise QB is playing. Aren't you guys tired of being patient? We need to make a playoff run this year.

I think it's fair to be a little hesitant with Jimmy at this point. He never really had a strong arm, and it looks even weaker right now. Also, the first three games last year he looked decent, but not like a surefire franchise QB. You guys should raise expectations a bit.

My biggest problem with where Jimmy is currently, is the fact that there are really only 2 possibilities here. 1) Jimmy is rusty after having a long injury break, and/or he doesnt have enough actual game time in his career yet. or 2) that Jimmy simply isnt very good.

My, and most people's opinion is clearly #1. That he is just shaking the rust off. The problem I have with this is the fact that there is ONE way to get rid of rust: PLAY. When I was advocating that Jimmy play a ton more during the preseason than he did, I was attacked and bashed by most Niner fans on here.

Well you cant have it both ways guys. If Jimmy is just rusty, it was inexcusable to play him as little as we did this preseason. Because he clearly does not look ready yet.

I have high hopes for him and this team. But he will need to improve a lot.
