End thread.

At least with Jimmy, people kinda feel like he's worth it and with potentials. Not sure I can say the same with Carr and Stafford

The SusReigns of the world need to read and acknowledge.

The HUGE up front money makes a ton of sense for both JG and the team - he gets paid and the Niners aren't as strapped going forward, leaving a lot of room for future signings.

DO IT.
you can make your point without calling out posters for the sole purpose of inciting..i could say this article caters to fan boys like you but i will refrain. some of us think a tag is not a good thing. so what

Sus, Reign and I have teased each other about this topic in the past. My post - unlike yours - was meant in jest and made without malice.

lol fan boys.

The 49ers and Garoppolo should agree to a deal worth $130 million over the next five seasons, with $80 million in guaranteed money and $60 million given up front as a signing bonus.

That 60mil signing bonus going to count against the cap, spread out the 5 years, at 12mil a year. If Jimmy is some how off the team, that's 12mil of dead money a year. That 12mil a year counts against the cap whether Jimmy is on or off the team.

Where's the 'saving' the article is talking about...?

There should be a balance in the guaranteed money between signing bonus and roster bonus.

The up front money is pro-rated over 5 years? I was not aware. Even so, with an ever rising cap, that seems like a reasonable gamble.

Savings in not franchising him 1,2, or even 3 years.

I think some are confusing roster bonus with signing bonus. Roster bonus counts against the cap for only that year. This is why you would read news about team having to decide whether to cut the player or accept the player by roster bonus date.

Any reason why a chunk of the up front $ couldn't be deemed a roster bonus?

Possible, but that's crazy. 60mil chunk hit in one year for just one player. I'm sure there are other player contracts to account for that year already alotted.

But that's perfect for this team - get the QB paid in a year when the team is flush with cash. $60M to JG would still leave almost $60M in cap space this year... and over $100M next (assuming for the sake of argument here only no FA signings).

Signing Bonuses are prorated.

You can still guarantee all that money in the form of Salary over years one and 2 and then have zero dead money against the cap if he doesn't work out. It also reduces his cap dollars in future years if you front load the contract to create space later since you have so much now.

Its just prudent no matter how you look at it. The money has to get spent one way or the other so only makes sense to eat up a bunch of cap space early to either let him go later of it doesn't work out with little to no cap hit or keep him and have cap $ for other players.

Nope. We can do it any way we want, pay him as much as we want up front up to the veteran minimum per year, and spread the cap hit out however we want. This is why I can't see how these two sides will have any trouble at all in reaching an agreement both sides are going to like.

Not necessarily. Signing bonus is but they can also include a "roster bonus" for the first year of the contract that will kick in almost immediately and give a cash payout up front as well. The Raiders did that with Derek Carr. He got a 10 mil signing bonus that's prorated over 4 years but a 15 mil "roster" bonus for this year as it's the first year of his new contract. So, his cash payout since he signed his new contract through March 2nd will be something like 28 mil after his base salary for last season is included.

JonnyDel pointed out many times since you can roll over unused cap money doesn't matter if we front load or back load the Jimmy g contract.

It made a lot of sense
Is it weird we haven't even started contract negotiations yet??
