The 49ers and Garoppolo should agree to a deal worth $130 million over the next five seasons, with $80 million in guaranteed money and $60 million given up front as a signing bonus.

That 60mil signing bonus going to count against the cap, spread out the 5 years, at 12mil a year. If Jimmy is some how off the team, that's 12mil of dead money a year. That 12mil a year counts against the cap whether Jimmy is on or off the team.

Where's the 'saving' the article is talking about...?

There should be a balance in the guaranteed money between signing bonus and roster bonus.

The up front money is pro-rated over 5 years? I was not aware. Even so, with an ever rising cap, that seems like a reasonable gamble.

Savings in not franchising him 1,2, or even 3 years.
