CTE and the possible long term effect on football

Baltimore Raven John Urschel retires at 26, two days after the damning CTE report is released. He obviously has options, being a doctoral candidate at MIT. But how long before this sport is deemed the modern day gladiator ring, with the gladiator deaths just being more prolonged? Maybe people here will start cutting Chris Borland some slack.

quitter.
99% is a SMH. I can see how the stats are, maybe, being spun but the figure is still more than frightening. Changes are probably coming. Rugby as well.

No they're not.

We could potentially be witnessing the death of collision sports. A mass extinction if you will. Shame, I'll probably give up following sport if that is the case.

But, I can't blame people for not wanting to suffer the effects of CTE.

Hard to say either way. $$$ is a big factor. There are some professions where there is a maximum amount of time you can work in the position due to health reasons, and I wonder if something like that could occur. I dunno. Probably not. But it's an intriguing topic right now.

Science might have a solution for it, but not in the near future. At one point knee injuries were a career ender, but not anymore thanks to science. I think the NFL should fund research and development into brain injury remedies like stem cell treatments and such, and they already have a pretty good compensation plan for permanent injuries. I think. And if not, they should have insurance for it.

I don't think the full impact of CTE has trickled down far enough yet. It doesn't matter if they take precautions in the NFL if rookies are arriving in the league with a laundry list of concussions from college/youth football already.

New helmets, better technique and probably some stiffer penalties for stupid play will reduce the risk a LOT. Other than highlight reels there's really no need for decapitating people and leading with the helmet in the game.

Players may retire earlier after getting paid but I don't see it having a long term effect today with regards to the supply of players that are dreaming of becoming a professional athlete and all that comes with that.
People will stop letting their kids play. Basketball will takeover as #1 sport.

Kids are moving to safer sports like binge watching TV shows, playing video games online and viewing porn.
Is the diabeetus better than CTE?

Yeah the courts are empty these days. You don't have to wait for games like you did before, if at all.

If you took the word "football" out of all these really troubling articles and replaced with "boxing," and then changed the date to something in the 80s-90s, the overlap would be shocking. Here's how the decline will happen: high schools can't handle the legal liability for it and begin to drop their programs. At the same time, more and more parents (like me) forbid it. I begged my parents to play football. They said no for years and finally relented in high school. Back then it was concern about spine injuries/paralysis. I now get more than ever why they said no, and I would not let my kids do it, no question.

I love watching as much as anyone else, but there's no question that anyone with any intelligence should at least have a moral qualm about it at this point. The fact that it's predominantly low-income kids of color destroying their brains for our amusement is troubling as well.
