I haven't seen him live, and the people who went to his Pro Day told me he had an excellent day." -- Mike Mayock OVERVIEW A lot of people know that the Hawkeyes' signal caller is the grandson of former NFL general manager Bobby Beathard -- but now C.J. is a father in own right after he and his girlfriend welcomed a girl (Lyla) into their world in December. He was the most prolific quarterback in Tennessee his final two years of high school (runner-up for one of the state's Mr. Football awards). As a redshirt freshman, Beathard played a little (9-27, TD, two INT) and the following year he saw the field more often (nine games, one start, 645 yards, five TD, two INT). He was given the reins of the offense as a junior, earning team MVP and second-team All-Big Ten honors by completing 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,809 pass yards, 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Beathard wasn't as effective as a senior (56.5 completion pct, 1,929 yards, 147TD, 10 INT) but is still considered a solid developmental prospect. ANALYSIS STRENGTHS Played in pro-style passing attack, working under center and from shotgun. Capable and confident rolling out. Squares shoulders to deliver strikes. Completed 57 percent of his passes outside of the pocket at Iowa. Showed improved touch on short throws. Footwork and pocket mechanics look solid. Throws with some natural accuracy despite pedestrian completion percentage. Better tape in 2015 as he had to overcome injuries to key targets in 2016. Has the arm strength to throw the deep out without laboring. Trusts his line and keeps eyes downfield. Plays with relatively calm demeanor. Good feel and timing for screen game. Knee brace slowed him some during senior season, but he has ability to escape the heat. Team leader with ability to handle adversity. Won't take unnecessary chances. WEAKNESSES Hesitation is a noticeable issue. Often late to pull trigger on throws toward the sideline, forcing receivers into boundary and out of the catch. Slow field scanner who tends to lock into a single side. Too much eye-balling and not enough manipulating. Poor feel for pocket pressure. Two-year sack total of 58 is too high in play-action attack. Anchors deep in pocket and rarely climbs pocket to safe harbor. Oblivious to backside pressure until it's too late. Needs more air under the long ball. Deep-ball accuracy has been terrible. Completed under 30 percent of throws beyond 20 yards in last two seasons at Iowa. Completed just 43 percent of throws beyond line of scrimmage to right sideline. DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 6-7 NFL COMPARISON Tom Savage BOTTOM LINE Pro-style quarterback who dealt with nagging injuries to key pass catchers and himself in 2016. His 2015 tape was more impressive, but deep-ball accuracy issues, poor pocket awareness, and unnecessary hesitation as a passer shows up in both seasons. Beathard plays checkers with safeties rather than chess, which could always hinder his ability to attack down the field with success. No, it really isnt intriguing at all. If Beathard was cut tomorrow, he would end up on someone else's practice squad, the XFL, or your local Safeway. The idea that a team would trade for him is comically absurd.

I'd like to see Bearhard go to a team with a different system and see how he does. Some QB's are better in more simple systems as Shannys is extremely complicated from what I hear. Beathard will never start here unless both Jimmy and Mullins drop, which at that point the season is over anyhow. I'd enjoy seeing him go to the Jets and get some PT this season to see if he's better in a less complicated system and see how what's he's learned here in SF translates. Plus I just like the dudes mentality and root for him.

With Skule starting at LT, it's probably pretty wise to keep him for now. In fact, we should probably have both him and Mullens active on Sunday.

The Jets need someone to fill in. Darnold is out for another month and their backup dislocated his ankle. If the Jet's aren't on the phone calling for Beathard then I think that says everything people need to know about his value and he should simply be cut loose.

We are one wrong hit away from losing JG if our OL doesn't go well with Staley out. Mullins steps up. If he gets hurt and we have traded CJ what happens?

Look at the Steelers. They traded Dobbs on 9 September then Roethlisberger ruins his arm now all they have is Rudolph III. Now what happens to the Steelers if Rudolph III gets hurt. No that I would want to see him hurt but if he was this weekend it would be an absolute blow out for us. Steelers are doubly stupid because they just traded their first round pick for CB and now they need a QB.

This is true of nearly every team in the NFL and can be said of more than just a bad hit. Examples:
1. We are one sexual assault allegation away from (Antonio Brown)...
2. We are one failed drug test away from (too many to name)....
3. We are one retirement announcement away from (Hello Anthony Davis)....
4. We are one trade demand away from (Jalen Ramsey)....

You can't make all of your decisions based on what if. You put the best 53 players on the roster and hope you made the right decisions. Once the season starts and injuries happen you adjust as needed. The NFL is a next man up league. I'm sure the Patriots thought their season was over when Bledsoe got hurt and they had to put their 6th rounder in there.

The point you miss is that JG still is not 100% from his injury. This is very real and is something FO need to worry about and plan for. Kyle's scheme isn't easy to learn and bringing in even a genius QB it will be over a month before they are ready. Planning with your head in the sand about the lynch pin on the team is not smart IMO.

If they don't offer what we value him at, he's not going anywhere. That's why he hasn't been traded already. Teams already called and it was reported our asking price was higher than anything anyone was willing to offer.

Beathard isn't going anywhere until we have another viable #3 on the squad, at minimum.

it is absolutely worth to get something like a quality OL player for CJ. it's not worth risking a backup swing tackle when our FQB is everything. QB's are dropping left and right

The Steelers would lose the same amount of games if they had to start Dobbs as if they picked someone up off the street. All of them.

I'm all for planning but carrying 3 QB's isn't always the best answer when you have roster spots at a premium. Jimmy is still recovering and I admit that I hold my breath every time he takes off running but Nick isn't coming off of an injury and that what if game can get you in trouble fast. As for learning the system I understand that but how many quarterbacks have stepped into system they know nothing about and done just fine for a limited time (Jimmy included) simply because they were playing and not overthinking? For a few game solution, which is all a 3rd QB should ever be, they don't have to be great.

He should take this time on the bench to learn how to be quicker on the read, if he's not already doing it.
