They cut Hogan, and Lock needs a lot of work before he is reliable. What do they do if Flacco gets hurt before the 9th game?
Obviously they need a backup. They just don't need to spend anything to get one. As far as that backup ever seeing the field, you mean, if Flacco gets hurt for the second time of his twelve year career?
Though he has been durable, Flacco has some miles on him now. Guys get hurt as they get older.
As it stands now, they have no one to back him up. Brian Hoyer is out there, and he lost his job to Beathard. Numerous other similar options are out there.

If you don't care about actually winning.
How many wins were you expecting from a mid round QB?
People bad mouth both our talent and all the injuries we suffered these last couple seasons, but then expect a young QB to lift up the offense and lead this team to wins like he's a Rodgers or Wilson type talent. Only a handful of QB's in this league can mask such problems.
Lets be honest, people were done with Beathard once Mullens came in with the same exact roster and blew out the Raiders on that primetime game.
Be honest with yourself. Do you really think Beathard would have put up a performance like that during that night? He has never done that in his career. Even against bad teams.
Maybe you will say yes, he could have been capable of doing that. I'm sure thats what Shanahan believes too. But as fans.....I don't think most believe it.

Why get rid of CJ for a backup like Exum, Lee, Toran or Wilson Jr.? He's guaranteed to be on another team the second we release him because he can make all the throws, is athletic, has solid size, and doesn't make a bunch of dumb decisions. His biggest weakness is that he needs to speed up his decision making to cut down on the sacks and missed windows of guys being open. Once he starts to trust his eyes he has the tools to be a quality starter in this league or at worst a solid backup that can spot start if needed.
There are teams out there who run much less complex offenses than the one CJ has been learning and getting starts in, so it's kind of ridiculous to think he'd be out of the league if KS wasn't playing favorites. Josh freaking Johnson just secured a spot on a team's 53!

CJ would get sacked about 80 times on that team if they tried to have him throw the ball.
They have their decent vet QB who never gets hurt (he's 6'6'' and 245), and they have their hopeful QBOTF. If Denver had an earthquake that damaged the stadium or the same likelihood Flacco gets hurt again, they're screwed and they know it. On that offense, no scrub backup is going to score a lot of points. They'd hand the ball off and wait for the D to win the game for them. They don't have to spend anything to find somebody like that.

My guess is that the Broncos wanted Mullens and were willing to pay. Having Lock and him both would be very appealing.
For CJ, they may have offered a 7th. Mebbe.
Whatever they deal is that somebody wanted, Denver wasn't willing to pay the price.

A waste of a roster spot.

Yep, because every single one of those losses was on CJ and CJ alone.
Many first round picks don't start during their rookie season, yet our mid round QB was asked to shoulder the load because Hoyer became unplayable. People also seem to ignore that this isn't the easiest offense to learn and KS and others have repeated this many times, yet our mid round pick is a lost cause because he didn't master it in just 2 seasons.
Some of you fans would've pounded the table to cut Kirk Cousins after his first 2 seasons under the Shanahan's.

I don't really have a dog in this fight. Like many I think Mullens is probably better at running the offense than CJ and should be the number two.. It just seems as though there are certain players that get under the skin of the FO and become an itch that they must continue to scratch. They have Ward on defense and now CJ on offense. I have no doubt that CJ leading the blocking on Wilson's TD run against the Chargers went a long way to solidifying the qualities that Shanahan likes in him, his toughness and do anything for the team attitude. I imagine character counts for a lot in this locker room and so they weren't willing to cut him or settle for less than they felt he was worth to them in trade value. We'll see how it works out I guess.
There are probably still options down the road and I am not sure, looking at the cut list, that there is anyone they have really lost out on yet because of their decision to keep Beathard, or four TE's which was a bit of a head scratcher as well. Again, like many, I thought Wilson did a good enough job to warrant a place on the PS this year. He may still end up there if he isn't claimed by someone else. I was rooting for Moore because of his personal story but the guy has kicked around the league for 6 years and the team really would have needed to believe that he was markedly better than all of the guys ahead of him for him to make the cut. They have already brought Valoaga back apparently and could bring Givens back as well. The Marcell Harris cut was a bit of a surprise given Ward and Tartt's history with injuries, but it seemed like he was better in the box than in coverage so perhaps they thought Moore and Reed would be give them more flexibility.
I still think there maybe movement with the WR' as well. Clearly they kept seven because of the injuries to Taylor and Hurd, once those guys come back they may decide to cut one of the others loose. I think Bourne will probably be on the hot seat until he proves he can be a more consistent player. And of course I imagine they will be keeping an eye on any offensive lineman that hit the waiver wire which means Skule's stay on the 53 could be a short one. I thought all and all it was a pretty encouraging pre-season in many ways. As usual they just have to get all of their guys back healthy and hope that Saleh and his new assistants can get the most out of the defense. Now they have a team that is made up almost exclusively of "their guys" time for everyone to step up and show what they can do. Go Niners!

Total waste of a roster spot.
Note they kept all their draft picks too...Skule, K.Smith and Azeez (even Brunskill) even though all 4 probably should be on our PS needing at least a full year of development before competing next year.
In fact Saleh was just talking about how Azeez basically has only been exposed to 1 of 3 phases.
It seems like ShanaLynch are going overboard here to covet their own picks for hit rates. "See, all our guys made it. We did great!"
If the end goal is to wait until a starter goes down at some point and trade then, teams clearly are already going different routes. They'll go a different route then too. Should have taken a 5th and run esp. given our success with the 5th round.
