Yeah, maybe. Right now Ford seems to be taking the 1's snaps at what we used to call Big End (left/strong side) but out at W9, which makes it easier for a 255 pound ER to set the edge and still get after it if it is a pass. I might be off but that means the 'big end' is at LEO where Armstead and Bosa are rotating. In fact, Ford is exclusively working against McGlinchey and Bosa against Staley. That's for a reason.
Big End (AA) and Big LEO (ST) are becoming non-existent if W9 becomes predominant like Andre is hinting at.
But ultimately, it's up to Saleh (allegedly).

In base, either one can give us that needed pass rush on base downs. And as for wide 9, that to me, is just another 4 man pass rush alignment. What I dont like about the wide 9 is that it's a lot harder to do stunts and twists with those wider splits.
When Aldon got his rookie sack record, it was the stunts and twists with justin/Buckner that was the key. Not a wide 9 alignment. The wide 9, in my opinion takes a bit away from the blind side hits that the Sefert/caroll defense needs to creat turnovers. But again, I have confidence in Kyle and saleh to figure that out.
Yeah, the day we acquired Ford and drafted Bosa should have been the day fans said, "Finally, no more Armstead, Thomas and Marsh dominating end snaps!"
We'll have to check in with the line experts like Hero and others but the W9 might help with the stunts as it gives a smaller guy like Ford space to convert speed-to-power crashing the T down into the G while the 3T loops around off that chaos??? vs. the traditional J.Smith with brute strength standing there occupying a G with one hand and grabbing the T with his other and strong enough to hide it from the officials while Aldon loops under uncontested.

Agreed, technically Saleh could still be run-defense-centric because that's what he was tasked with fixing upon hire but I think with Ford and Bosa and the money and draft capital invested in the ends, W9 suits their game best and I highly doubt ShanaLynch want either sitting on the bench watching Arik Armstead and/or Solomon Thomas at Big End/Big LEO for run defense.
Maybe they'll want to bring Bosa along slowly splitting time with Armstead at first?
But we'll see...
I. Hope NC is incorrect in thinking that Saleh was hired to stop runs up the gut so he remains run centric. I have wondered about that with the wide 9s, among others. the statement is correct, but the question of will saleh remain a run centric DC? Man i. Hope not. It will be pretty easy to know early on. If so, does kyle or JL step in and say ,"hey bubba, we gotta take care of passing game too" . He seems very conservative,...look at his playcalls...and he does worry about up the gut plays. More than what we run...i just hope Saleh isn't the saleh of the last two yrs.
He has to make a break from his incredible conservative self. May be harder than we think. I just hope kyle or John step in if that is the trend. FRankly whatever we run will be a breath of fresh air after last 2 yrs.
Guys lining up inside ...and then jumping to outside is not my idea of being clever. It sucked...worse it fooled no one. Now with talent, i just pray saleh uses it ...wisely. If he can't do that by game 4 , i hope JL steps in and puts a stop to it. I hope saleh does as we all expect of him and earns his job.
That makes no sense, and I don't think you're going to see that.
