This would be smart for him to stay in the league and work under another Head Coaches scheme exposing him to new ideas which would help him develop his own. I think he will benefit from the experience and keep his foot in the door which will give him an advantage in competing for another HC position in a couple of years.

He is a football guy who loves the game and I thing he still has great potential to develop.

I would love to see him as an offensive coordinator. He could prove his offense works without having the burden of worrying about other aspects of running a team, he can network with other coaches, so that should he get a real 2nd chance, he can have a better selection of defensive coaches in particular, and it could potentially bring some innovation to the NFL.

Also the idea that his offense failed because if how quickly he ran plays does not apply to the 49ers this year. This team was slow compared to the Eagles teams. Hopefully a defensive minded coach gives him a call or even his buddy Bill Belichek puts him on the Patriots staff.

He should have taken the Oregon job in the first place. He was over-confident that he wasn't going to get fired by Jed.

He must really not want to back to college. He's still getting paid take the year off and get a nice lifetime gig where he belongs.

He has a future in the NFL though an OC gig might be the best next step for him. It would give him a chance to polish some things while gaining exposure to other thinking. Never hurts to listen to others.

His passing game made it easy for mediocre receivers to get open. Reminds me a bit of when Walsh first introduced his WCO. Not revolutionary but contained some well executed concepts that work no matter what mode the defense is in.

He needs to add some components to his offense such as a FB and power game. He didn't have the pieces to make that change in SF. Whether or not he would embrace that remains to be seen but he has to have players.

I don't buy the idea that the pace of his offense puts the defense in an untenable situation. He proved he can slow it down when the situation dictates. Again, it takes decent players to execute any offense and he certainly limited here. Most of the playoff teams run some up-tempo offense. NE runs very fast a good bit of the time. GB the same. Oakland was beginning to do it. Up-tempo has proven to be a good tool to wear down an opponent. If it was really such a horrible defense-killer Bill Belichick, one of the best defensive minds of the past 20 years, would not be running it.

He got stuck with Jim O'Neil trying to learn to be a DC in this league. Not a good fit in time or place. Too bad the overall situation was such a mess there were not better DCs available.

Yes, he got a bad deal here, and yes, he needs to add some pieces, however, I would argue he is much closer to being a solid NFL coach than some assert.

Step 1: eat some humble pie
Step 2: understand that your style of offense hurts your defense
Step 3: find a way to integrate your offense into the NFL, not the other way around.

If you can't do that, then you may as stand next to Mike Martz.

He will probably have to go be an OC somewhere to show that his offense can be successful with a decent team before he will get that shot though

No, he doesn't deserve anything. If he gets another HC job, good for him. I'm not down on him as a coach, I think his style can work in the NFL, but he's had 4 years to prove himself and his record has gotten progressively worse. The team around him has something to do with that, but there's also factors that were under his control and he didn't deliver. He's kind of like the Kap of HCs lol.
