Seems like more of a power play by his agent than anything else, so he can go up to prospective clients and say "I got my guy concessions from the Chargers that they wouldnt give to even Phillip Rivers or Antonio Gates. How awesome am I?"

Meanwhile San Diego is stubbornly sticking to their precedent despite the PR hit and risking losing a Top 3 pick completely.

Why would the chargers not respond to a proposal after 14 days? Seems like you'd be on the phone the next day with a counter offer.

Just give the kid one or the other like every other draft pick as got and stfu. lol

Except every other draft pick didnt get "one or the other." The argument San Diego is making is that guys picked higher than Bosa in recent years have agreed to similar terms and that they as a franchise dont offer those concessions to even their top players such as Rivers.

Meanwhile Bosa's agent can argue that based on draft slot and the last couple of #3 picks, Bosa should get all his bonus in 2016 rather than spreading it out into 2017.

Both sides are deadlocked over something that wont earn or save either side any money.

What. SD has $9,883,339 of dead money this year. $6.6m of Donald Butler's signing bonus is dead cap money. Ouch.
With their top 51 contracts they have $7.5m in cap space right now.

I don't think the chargers can just hand over all of the bonus money that Bosa wants and still be under the cap?
So they are forcing their hand to remove the offset language in his contract because they know he's not getting both.

SD isn't doing anything about because they have no room to negotiate.

Bosa would get 85% of his signing bonus this year based on the Chargers offer that was publicized and the rest in March 2017.

And only 2 out of 32 NFL teams dont insist on offset language. Neither team is the Chargers and I dont see them bending on that point.

If/when someone caves, it will be on signing bonus payment schedule.

I just don't understand why the Chargers can't pay the man all at one time?

Because they are overly attached to the way theyve always done stuff but the way theyve always done stuff hadnt won them anything so..........

Im guessing they look at it as they didnt offer those terms to their very best players so why do it for a rookie but they are hurting themselves over that stance right now.

Does it really matter? They made a counteroffer, Bosa's people declined and the result is a Mexican standoff where neither guy has any actual bullets.

Um, yeah. Bosa's team said they made an offer on the eve of training camp and SD didn't respond for 14 days? That kinda sounds like they didn't really want him there, lol.

Neither side benefits from Bosa not being there. Both sides have largely taken a hardline stance in these negotiations.

Someone has to cave sooner or later because nobody wants to set off the nuclear option of Bosa being unsigned by week 10 and actually going back into the draft.

We know all of this. People just keep saying the same things over and over. No reason on why the team was silent for 2 full weeks after getting an offer. How is that on Bosa or his agent?

I'm actually hoping he goes back in the draft so the NFL world can finally understand how toxic that organization is (and ungrateful Niners fans can understand our ownership is actually not that bad )

Me too. I hope he doesn't get signed and goes back into the draft. Although, he may be a second rounder since it would be one year since he's out of football. I also find it ironic that the chargers' organization was this bad since they were the premiere franchise in the early to mid 2000's.

Once again -- if you're arguing that Bosa is in the right to hold his ground then this whole thing for you just boils down to a matter of principle. That's fine. But the fact remains, if Bosa holds out and re-enters the draft, he will 100% be worse off financially for it. Please do not confuse the two. There is no way (not ever) for Bosa to recoup a year of lost earnings and the associated time value of money.

If Bosa "stands his ground" he is doing so by essentially paying a massive fee. Financially speaking, there is no question he should accept the Chargers latest offer. They are not far apart on money. They're disagreeing on timing.

The Chargers very well may be a cheap organization. But the more this drags on and the more money Bosa loses -- the more this sounds like an agent with an axe to grind and not an agent with the best interest of his client in mind.

Eli Manning demanded a trade.
Rivers held out for over 3 weeks when he was traded there.
Shawne Merriman held out for a week

SD doesn't want to pay Bosa for his 5th year if he's cut or goes to another team. So if he signs the deal he could lose a year of money anyway.

Why is SD trying to make Bosa be the first?
Since the new CBA has been ratified, there has not been a No. 3 overall pick whose contract included both offset language and a split signing bonus.
