Why?
1) Payton
2) Cap $$$ (can sign him AND players).
3) Draft picks (ability to add players).
Now...if you get Payton AND Brees, all of the sudden offensive players see this as a spot they'd want to go to...like say a Calvin Johnson IF he becomes available.
There are ALOT of ifs there and at this point it's all dreaming...but despite the way the media portrays the team, there is a lot to attract coaches to SF.
O-Line Issues? They have $$, draft picks, and are about to get their RT back. Brown looked decent these past two weeks, Tiller is improving, and Kilgore is MUCH better than Martin. Not nearly as far away as some think.
Imagine all that
We'd be like the Broncos of the NFC lol...honestly what would be a fair number for Brees though? He's 36 and Baalke isn't one for salary cap hell down the road.

I'd give two #2 for Sean and Brees in a package.. other than that, I don't see Payton wearing the Red and Gold asking for Juicy Fruit next year..

New Orleans isnt in cap hell and with almost no talent on defense because he has been a good steward of personnel.
Stephone Anthony is going to be a stud and Cam Jordan is one of the best in the league.

But maybe I am just biased because Brees ruined my fantasy team...
uh....I think you need to define "struggling".

Its worked before. Belichick and Gruden were both traded and produced Super Bowls.

You don't want to trade for Brees. You don't want THAT contract and its in its last year.

Weird how most of you that are knocking this, are the same ones dat espoused such declarative statements as: "Yorks too egotistical to fire Tomsula", " no good coach would WANT TO COME HERE", " "Were screwed until York sells team, he wants minions not equals"...YEAH , BUT HE DID FIRE TOMSULA, A LOT OF COACHES DOOOOOO WANNNA COME HEEEERRRRRRRREEEE!!!!, and his parents have to sell team.... We can trade down and pick up the 2nd. back.. But hey with ALL THE COACHES WANTING TO COME HERE, we DONT have to do the deal anyways.. 49ERS GOT CHOICES...DEAL WIT IT

A second rounder is the starting price. Negotiations go from there. I like Payton a lot and would happily give a (high) 3rd round pick. We have 12 picks this year plus we may still be able to get something for Kaepernick. The Head Coach is one of the most critical and valuable positions in any franchise. Payton's a good fit. Do it.

I like the idea of Payton. DC position becomes a concern tho. Im not all to excited about keeping Mangini. But a 2nd rounder for Payton is worth it imo. Id prefer a 3rd since that 2nd is a high ass pick this year. But our offense would FINALLY have a legitmiate chance to be elite.

Stanley Jean Baptiste is on a PS somewhere, a year after being taken in the 2nd round, their 4th and 5th rounders last year are out of the league entirely.
Kenny Vacarro was a mid 1st round pick that has been benched multiple times on a terrible secondary.
Overall their defensive drafting and talent acquisition has been subpar. On the other hand, he's done a good job drafting OL and WR.

Not if you ask Saints fans, they think its like an auction, that you name your price and it only goes up from there.

I wish 49ers QBs could have off-years like that.

Two players doesn't make a good defense lol. Question is who does Payton bring in as DC? Does mangini keep his job?
I'm all for Payton looking at the offense come draft day and Baalke looking at the defense.

I know you mentioned this, but that totally complements the areas where Baalke lacks.
I'm trying to figure out how much of Payton's success is due to having Brees. Been reading some articles on Payton and he has a unique way of building his OL. He seems to values guards (interior OL) over tackles.

It's a high price to pay, but I think Payton's worth it. Baalke can garner more picks...especially if he can deal Kaepernick. So, if it comes down to a pick, I'd hope Jed/Baalke would do it. Payton's a high quality coach and Gabbert & whomever he/Baalke would draft would be in great hands. Niner fans would see an offense they could be proud of.
