Even if draft picks were sure things, a good coach will have more impact than any single player available in the 2nd this year. A good coach is like a franchise qb - it's more important to have one than to get hung up on getting one for "good value".
If you think Payton's the guy, than go get him. If you don't, than go get the guy you do want.
A 2nd round pick shouldn't be the deciding factor either way.

We'd save that much whether or not we choose to bring in Brees. We'll have $60 million or so in cap room after making cuts and before resigning or extending our own players. I'm not sure I want to spend a third of that on a soon to be 37 year QB (Jan 15) when we're not likely to even be a playoff team next year. I'm also not sure why Brees would want to end his career here.

IF (big if) Payton becomes the Niners HC and IF (big if) Brees is let go because of that contract # than I'd think SF would become Brees #1 option.
Why?
1) Payton
2) Cap $$$ (can sign him AND players).
3) Draft picks (ability to add players).
Now...if you get Payton AND Brees, all of the sudden offensive players see this as a spot they'd want to go to...like say a Calvin Johnson IF he becomes available.
There are ALOT of ifs there and at this point it's all dreaming...but despite the way the media portrays the team, there is a lot to attract coaches to SF.
O-Line Issues? They have $$, draft picks, and are about to get their RT back. Brown looked decent these past two weeks, Tiller is improving, and Kilgore is MUCH better than Martin. Not nearly as far away as some think.

i would also like for us to do something we have not done for ever,. get brees who can still play, draft a nice kid and have him set and learn for two years . we still have blaine who is more than respectable in the back up role

I think that would be the plan. Goff? Lynch? Dunno...but SOMEBODY would have to be groomed behind Brees.
