Commitment to Zone Blocking... You absolutely need a guy like this at center to run a ZBS at a high level. A smaller smarter player like Chris Myers whose speed of recognition and quickness and good use of angles lets him combo and get to the second level. Martin is more of a gap scheme center, who makes a better ZBS guard. Probably not a move that pays immediate dividends but a step in the right direction to better match personnel with scheme.
OK Phoenix you got me that was me who made this comment. Sorry about that, the knowledge just kicks in sometimes.

Plus the release of Looney is yet another example of moving away from power with a full transition into ZBS personnel fits!

I have been hoping to see the 49ers move away from the antiquated behemoth bulldozers that can't move. A ZBS base gives so much more latitude in play design.
I just got in and read about this trade. I am excited for what it is and for what it means about the perceived direction the staff is going. It may take some time for all the pieces to fit together but I believe by mid-season, this offense will be much better than in the past.
Yeah, when it was stated we were going to run power AND the ZBS, I was like, "Yeah right...we're going full 100% ZBS." And now the personnel choices confirms that.
