As good as Trent Brown is it's all about scheme for for Shanahan.

I really like Trent Brown but he just isn't a fit. If he struggles to get to his zone on run plays and play action fakes the whole play is blown up.

Philly needs a tackle. We need a pass rusher.

I think Trent Brown for Vinny Curry works on both ends. Brown can slide into RT and Lane Johnson can move to LT. Derek Barnett is ready for more snaps at DE and they have 51 million invested in their Dline. Curry had a good year and is strong vs the run and was PFF's 21st overall DE with an 84.8 grade. He would slide in at LEO and give us a reliable starter.

Then we can look to add a tackle in the draft. A guy who fits our scheme and we won't have to pay LT money to Trent Brown in a year when his deal is up. I just cannot see Shanahan giving Brown a top 10 deal for a guy who isn't even close to a fit for our offense.

We can target a guy like Pittsburgh's Brian O'Neal who is a perfect bookend for us in later in the draft or use 9/10 on Mike McGlinchey who is an ideal RT for us.

LT- Joe Staley
LG- Andy Levitre / Laken Tomlinson
C- Daniel Kilgore
RG- Josh Garnett
RT- Mike McGlinchey / Garry Gilliam

LDE- Solomon Thomas / Elvis Dumervil
NT- Earl Mitchell / Sheldon Day
RDT- Deforest Buckner / Arik Armstead
LEO- Vinny Curry / Cassius Marsh

Yes please!

I just saw a photo of him at some jewelry store. He looks as fat as ever.

At minimum, the re-signing of Gary Gilliam should tell Brown that he either comes back in good shape or expect to be gone. Will it motivate him? We will soon find out.

It also says that Lynch has little confidence in Brown's self-discipline, to say nothing of whether or not he can adapt to Kyle's scheme.

You make an interesting point....with all the decent Pass rush talent tagged in F/A and only one in the draft really being seen as potentially really good day 1 as a top 3 pick there is reason to believe KS and company are possibly evaluating the potential trade market with assets that can be moved.

Get a good blocking tight end on that side to help the run game and I think Trent will be fine. Between a good pass blocker and ok run blocker vs an ok pass blocker and good run defender, I think Kyle will chose the good pass blocker. A big portion of Kyle's offense is passing to set up the run. So, for example, how hard would it be for Trent to run block a guy that's intent to rush the passer when a draw play or screen pass is called?

A good run-blocking TE doesn't help him at all with reach blocks to his left.

He also is fine at wiping out the guy on his nose, and the CB or LB directly behind him. But no he isn't built for Zone blocking. For QB protection, there is NOT any OT out there who is better at it.

So let's see......if i owned this team, or was the HC or GM, what would be my # 1 concern on a team that is known for its porous OL in pass blocking? Well,, I would want to insure my money....ie, protect my investment of $137 mil. And if that is what Trent gives me, then he's my man. Where are the quickest best, Pass rushers ? Correct...at EDGE, just waiting to tee off on my $137 mil QB. I want the best blocking OT in the world protecting him from the outside. And for that, i will keep Trent. Oh, and we need 4-5 yds for a first down ? Just run right up trent's Backside and boom, RB never gets touched the first 4 yds. Maybe 5 if that's what's needed. But if the HC insists on using the best blocking RT in the league for ZBS, ok, then he is going to have to give up a lot of protection for my investment to be able to run ZBS with the RT. To me that is foolhardy. I want my FR QB, the one we have been waiting for 22 yrs....i want him protected in the very best way possible. And if somebody says, "Hey, i'll Give you a 3rd for the best blocking RT in the game."...does anybody think i am dumb enough to jump at that? If so they are talking to the wrong guy...because i want my investment safe...protected. And from the R side....Trent is the guy for the job.

It isn't like we have had the best blocking RT in history forever. We for the last 5- 8 yrs have had horrid RT blocking. Worse yet, no blocking at all. Anybody who watched all QBs before jimmy saw how worthless our other RTs were while Trent was out with shoulder surgery. Not one of them could protect our QB from the R side. Well we finally found an answer and a few of our fans want to trade him ? Cripes, some guys want egg in their beer with foam in the middle.
Watch Trent takeoff once he has been rehabbed for shoulder surgery.

I think Trent will eventually be moved to Staley's spot when Staley calls it quits. I think when that happens, you'll see Kyle probably draft an offensive lineman in the first three rounds. I think Trent can be as good as Staley in pass protection on the left side. And with Jimmy's quick release, Trent will have a very long career here.

Kyle also runs a lot of roll out stuff that requires a more mobile blocker than Brown has shown. You can't protect Brown with a TE which takes away one of the important components of the passing game.

It's a team game and the Tackle and Guard can switch assignments based on where the hole is predicted to be. Center's call, that's why a good and experienced center is key to Kyle's offense. Point is a TE will help Trent on blocks to his right (or where the TE is) Specially on sweeps when Trent is going to block down on the right end anyway.

Huh? If Kyle dials up OZ to the left, Trent Brown is going to have to reach/scoop somebody. The center has nothing to do with it.

If Dan Audick can protect Joe Montana, Trent will be just fine.

He's also a liability run blocking....unless he loses some weight and picks up some quickness.

Green bay sweep my friend. (as an example) The Line has to adjust to where the D Linemen are positioned, and it's OK if Trent has to reach block because the RB is going to read the blocking anyway and cut back or accelerate and go around. That's why a Back with speed fits more with Kyle's offense than a power back like Hyde.

That's going to be a challenge for him, but I think Kyle can scheme around Trent's weaknesses and go to Trent's strengths, otherwise why would he say Trent is a big part of the 49ers future?
Except that Trent Brown consistently allows the backside to cave in by not being able to reach defenders.

I still don't understand how you thought a "good run-blocking TE" helps Trent Brown in any way on stretch plays. Having someone to the right of him on plays going left doesn't help his struggles at all.
