That's his only option because Armstead is nowhere near stout enough to play DT. It was downright sad watching guards push him back last year like he wasn't there.

LOL...what? Dude was playing in a 3-4 with one arm and may end uo playing just as many snaps inside as outside this year. But we'll have to see the end result...way too early to make any claims.

He wasn't' any good at stopping the run his rookie year, either.

If it was the injury, then I'll be happy. But he's been injured 2 out of his last 3 years of playing football, so I'm not optimistic we're gonna see him dominate. Hope I'm wrong (I wanted Shane Ray).

When we drafted AA we still had Aldon and Brooks. Justin smith was 50-50 and AA was gonna rotate in if he wouldn't have retired.

Understandable... some wanted Peters, Ray, etc. Nothing we can do about that.

As to the player that is here, that's all we can focus on.

AA was brought in because he was a very good two gap 3-4 defensive end and towards the end of his final year, started adding some QB pressures and sacks to his resume.

But for whatever reason, he only got 300 snaps his rookie year and those were mostly in pass rush situations. Odd. And then the bad shoulder injury last year in training camp.

I certainly understand your reservations though.

On the positive side, maybe now that he's healthy, his run defense and pass rush will come together equally under better coaching and scheme and he becomes just as valuable inside as he does at the LEO on base downs keeping Elvis fresh and productive there.

At worst, he's an excellent interior depth player who can play 3 of the 4 DL spots and is still young and growing/developing.

Imo I never saw him getting push back on the reg at all...he was out of position a lot though. He didn't finish plays, which is on him and the scheme as well.

I also don't see him getting injuried as easily based on the rotation that our DC was to use.

I saw some laziness as well so I get that angle.

Where I struggled most in evaluating him is on his actual assignments. I do know that he was a terrific hold-the-point DL in the 3-4 who played all 3 spots, could read-react and play through 2 and make plays for minimal gains or TFL...he came here and was used in a completely different role and Saleh has since talked about the differences in his assignments vs. AA under Mangini and O'Neil.

In short, AA may have been executing his assignments more than we realized in the 700 snaps he's had here.
When you got nothing on either side of you, talentwise, or behind you, playing DL can make a guy look bad. Sure the best ones shine, still. Look at cowboy. But guys who are good DLs, but don't quite have the Cowboy talent....tend to look less good when they got nobody around them with talent. I thot at very start of last yr, Arik was going to take off. Then he kind of backslid, and then it became obvious he was playing hurt. So pretty much scratch last yr and he starts anew this yr.

This yr tho, he is surrounded side to side and in back , by truly talented guys. Lots of them. So i got a note by Arik's name...."poised to have a great yr"....just due to truly terrific talent he has all around him. NOW we see what he really has...assuming shoulder holds up. Playing a lot lighter, too, may very well change his performance. And Mayo is right...now he looks like an elephant.(or Leo).

These are good points...I like the scheme we have going for guys like AA.

Cream will rise to the top end of the day.

The only times I saw him moved out of the hole you could tell he wasn't certain what his assignment was. Not too surprising given the two years of musical chairs with coaches and schemes. This attack approach should help him greatly. I also believe it will help Buckner as he was often pushed off the line last year. AA also had a bad shoulder and that hurt his ability to stay balanced in the hole.

His lack of chasing plays, as opposed to Buckner, does bother me but they were usually to the side away from him. He should learn that he needs to follow and fill cut back lanes. Wish Justin Smith could give him his game sense and fire...which applies to every DL.

Yeah, he looks like a real LEO now.

...except he still has relatively short arms for a dude that tall.

That's impossible because Baalke drafted him.
Hopefully they don't ruin Arik with this weight cut.

Right? Harold adds 30-40 pounds in one off season, Carradine's roller coaster weight, etc.

Let's hope 3rd time is a charm.

33" arms are average for a 6'3" edge rusher. Dumervil has 32" arms at 5'11". Buckner's arms are almost 35"; Aldon Smith's are almost 36". Guys like clay Matthews can win w/shorter arms, but they can get LOW around the edge and win w/burst/flexibility. Armstead could struggle to get low or burst off the line. Maybe we'll see a significant increase in athleticism, due to the weight loss. Maybe he'll improve the sophistication of his hand fighting enough to negate the disadvantage of his relatively short arms. I hope he's effective early on, and that he improves with more game reps. As of this moment, I am skeptical of his ability to affect games on the edge.
