Yall acting like folks were sitting around twiddling their thumbs for 50+ years without a complaint.
You don't realize how this society works yet do you? This society (North America) is for the most part Eurocentric and therefore any group of people who aren't European is considered "minority". This isn't just limited to population size either, it also shows you whether or not that group of people's voices will be heard and taken seriously on a social scale. Due to European invasion and genocide, Native Americans are one of, if not THE lowest ranking group of people in western society. This is not their fault. It's also not their fault that because of this genocide, nobody takes them seriously. They've been pushed to the brink and the few thousands that are left would like some respect and we're sitting here like "hey nobody was complaining all this time!". It's silly.
People said the same thing during the Civil Rights movement and the women's liberation movement...."All this time nobody had a problem, now all of a sudden they're butthurt"....WRONG. The truth is, all this time the highest members of society were IGNORING/IGNORANT to the voice of the oppressed, and now the oppressed have increased their voice to a level you can't ignore anymore.

Kansas City Chiefs name is "offensive" and should be changed as well.

Kind of interesting to read newspaper articles from the 40's they are full of names which used to be perfectly fine that are now considered offensive. I don't understand how the PC police make their decisions on what is offensive and what is not. Here is an example I find contradictory. "Jap" which was short for Japanese quickly became a slur. While on the other hand using "Mex" to refer to Mexican is perfectly fine. Lee Trevino the golfer was nick named "Super Mex" because of his race and there are hordes of restaurants and products named "Super Mex" also lots of items with "Mex" in the name. If you named a frozen dinner "Hungry Mex" it would be fine, call one "Hungry Jap" and it is offensive, to that I say WTF!

In the 1940s, all major Newspaper articles were owned and written by upper-class white American men who were responsible for creating these racial slurs in the first place...... "Perfectly fine" for white America, not fine at all for everyone else (the "minorities").
"Jap" was used in a derogatory manner, primarily by white Americans in reference to Japanese people who they were at war with...It wasn't simply a "short version" of the word Japanese as you put it. Japanese people don't call themselves "Japs", so what gives Americans the right to?
"Mex" was used as a term of endearment and therefore "Super Mex" isn't offensive. It aint rocket science.

Look at it this way. For decades, women were refered to and viewed as property.
They were called names like "broad", "b*tch" etc. After DECADES of being called these names, and having gained some strength in numbers they stood up and said "we don't want to be called those names anymore!" Many men said "well you didn't have a problem all these years, why do you have a problem now?"
It's not that they were okay with it for so long...it's just that they lacked the power or strength in numbers to mobilize against their oppressor.
Ignorance is bliss for many....the only reason it SEEMS like these names are offensive NOW "all of a sudden" is because you weren't paying attention to the little guy all this time....now the little guy has grown up a bit and screams a bit louder, you're shocked.

What's funny about this is that they weren't named after Indians..they were named after a man with the nickname of "Chief".

Does a "Patriot" have to fight for our country? I'm offended because I've never physically fought for my country but consider myself a patriot. The mascot assumes all Patriots have to be soldiers and white and that offends me. Change the name nao!
You're right in saying a Chief isn't a race/group of people...the problem is, the Kansas City Chiefs logo and name etc all indicate that it has something to do with Native Americans. The warpaintted fans, the arrowhead stadium, the "chief" that rides on a horse, feathers etc etc... All of those are symbols of Native American culture being used without Native Americans permission. Like I said in an earlier post, it's not so much the name that is hurtful but it's using bits and pieces of their Culture without their permission that is highly offensive.
Chief IS a high ranking position...BUT Native Americans didn't actually call their leader "Chief". Chief is a European/English word. They don't speak English as their first language...it's a European misnomer with all the symbolism being linked to them as a People...that's where the problem lies.

Not caring comes in many ways, you can not care about the genocide, you can not care about the feelings of a defeated race, you can not care about the fans of the redskins, or the chiefs. Me I don't really care about the fans of these teams, it's not my team, so what? I do however feel that since our four fathers slaughtered theirs, we could possibly squeeze out a little consideration. In the end, it is not only good public relations, it will sell a lot of new apparel, and that is really what the league is about, making money.
This is a good quality post sir...well said
So many people on here are ignorantly saying things like "They should be happy with the representation", "It keeps their memory alive"...that's a typical European/Western perspective that you think you can speak for another group of people without even asking if the other group has a problem with it..

This was okay for years...

I remember eating at this place, it had a coloring book cartoon, of "Lil Black Sambo" on the kids menu!
I grew up in the 70's and 80's, before the politically correct purging of our culture began. It has been a long slow process, we have come a long way, I personally still have lots of work to do, my son and his friends are shocked sometimes by the causal racist slurs, homophobic jokes, and general insensitivity towards the handicapped I display, with out even noticing. I understand the words and ideas I learned in my youth are hurtful, and wrong to many, and I try to edit myself. It is a good sign that we have finally gotten around to being more sensitive to Natives, as it shows we nearing the end of the list of minorities in need of respect.
Yeah, I'm a dinosaur, but I know it, and I know I must change. You younger guys who think this is okay, really need to check yourselves.

In movies and television, up until the 1980's the only roles for african americans were, pimps, slaves, whores, muggers, and butlers. The only roles for asians were laundry shop owners, cooks railroad workers, and targets for white American solders. American Indians, were savages, drunks, and murders, while Arabs, were petty barbaric oilmen, or thieving duplicitous desert dwelling nomads. We have changed almost all of those stereotypes over the years, this is simply another brick to fall in the wall of racism. Defeating these ideas, will help unite this country, the use of "fear of others" has been used to separate people, so they can be turned on one another, there by aiding those in power. A united States, one that believes in the motto, "out of many, one"(E pluribus unum) will be a stronger, better nation.

There's still a Sambo's left in Santa Barbara, but they've ditched the "Lil Black Sambo" cartoon.
Wow, I bet they did ditch it, I remember coloring the water melon red, and thinking it was funny to black out his big teeth, just a kid, learning casual racism, in the 70's!

Some of you guys are off by about 20 years, I grew up in the 70's and 80's also. Racial slurs were no more acceptable back then as they are now, what is considered a slur has changed. Off course go back to the 50's and 60's then it is a different story. Same with negative portrayal of minorities in movies that was changing long before 1980 rolled around. Plenty of late 60's early 70's movies and TV shows portrayed minorities as heroes and positive role models, while admonishing bigotry.

I don't affiliate myself with any political group or group thinking. My views are my own. Negro and Colored were not "accepted" by all races....they were forced on Black people during a time when Black people had absolutely no social power (Jim Crow era). After generations of living in that system, Blacks and other so-called minorities have "adopted" the language of their oppressor. Anyone who know anything about sociology or the history of oppressed people in North America would know this.

The Academy? That's about the worst appeal to authority I've ever seen.
I am so tired of people always complaining about being offended over something that has no bearing on their lives. I have yet to hear a story of someone who's been hurt by the name of a sports team that is believable.

That's the thing. Nobody, unless they have waaay too much time on their hands, has their day ruined because of things like this. I call it false outrage. I'm to the point where I want the name "Redskins" changed. Not because I'm offended by it, but because I'm tired of hearing over-sensitive white people saying they are offended by it. Native Americans have every right to be offended by it and ask for it to be changed. But it seems like an oxy-moron for a white person to pretend to be offended by it.
