Barry Sanders HANDS DOWN. No question. For real. Can't argue about it. Don't even try. Stop. Shhh.

Lock this s**t up.

I'm out.

This is essentially how I feel. I don't believe there is any RB in the history of the game that matches him.

This is where i stand as well!

Ditto. In my lifetime I have never seen anyone move like him. I understand that Gale Sayers was the Barry Sanders before there was a Barry Sanders, and I know hie kicked a**. Sticking with Sanders--unbelievable runner.

With out a doubt! Kinda hilarious packers took a roided out linemen when they could have ended up with favre n sanders! Never have i seen another player come close to barry... Doubt ever will again. With teams going more passing, kinda slims them odds down a bit also. Least vs those high quality defenses... They seem to becoming less in our modern era!
Barry constantly slashed thru the bucs, pack, vikes, cowboys etc etc
And thanksgiving games have not been the same since his retirement.

Tho this yr we smash seattle woot woot!

Barry Sanders. But let's talk about second place....

I honestly think that Adrian Peterson belongs in this conversation. He has played for s**tty teams with very little passing game. Frank Gore falls into a similar boat. He was outstanding against 8 and 9 man defensive fronts. Neither Peterson or Gore is the electrifying runner that Sanders and Payton were, but they were enormously productive for crappy 1-dimensional teams.

Easy barry sanders! GOAT of rbs

Id like to know have you actually seen some of the teams Walter Payton played on??
I personally feel that the running styles of the backs mentioned factor into each ones greatness.Thinkin of what the OP mentioned about Earl Campbell,he had a bruising,north-south style.Barry,elusive.Sweetness,power and finesse.Dickerson and OJ,flat out speed,so on and so on.

Could some of us be judging the greatest based off a bias of our favorite style??Are some of us saying our favorite??I humbly think so.

How would one quantify the greatest, the best??Not sure we can mention a criteria, too many variables imho.

Very very true!
Imo gore is a hof'er tho may be tiff for em to get in. If we get ring #6 this season, it would help make his case! Esp in a new era where the bell cow has turned more of a committee of rb's

With Sanders there were a lot of "How did he do that?" moments, where you had to watch the replay to see how he got away from 4 guys who had him surrounded. With Jim Brown it was no mystery, he just ran over them, with such a huge physical edge with an unreal combination of size and speed for his day he really didn't need to develop any vision or moves. Barry Sanders would be just as effective playing in any era, Jim Brown would not. Jim Brown was the only 4.5 forty 230 pounder on the field in his day, now he would have company, still would be a great back, but no way he averages 5.2 per carry if he played today.

Barry was the only player i ever feared facing, from any opposing team! He was the definition of the it factor... to top it off nothing but class! one player i don't believe will ever be matched in my lifetime.. with his abilities unhuman like. My bones where broken of whiffed tackles, yet never laid a hand on em! His running style was no different from pee wee football to his hall of fame debut!!
